I want to start a blog in spanish, My main market is Spain but I want to have it available also for the latinamerican people. I would say I would like to aim for 50% of traffic from Spain and 50% of traffic from latinamerica. It is a blog I will be investing quite a lot, so I am quite concerned to get the correct domain from the start. Luckily, there are domain availables which match exactly my keywords. A while ago I bought two domains, which are: 1. Keyword1keyword2.es (from Spain) 2. Keyword1Keyword2.info Now I need to decide which one to use. I was always inclined to use the spanish (.es) since I have read that it improves the rankings in the specific country. However I am not too sure if it will be worse for latinamericans and at the end I will end up loosing more (from latinamericans) that what I gain from spanish people. And while I feel the present is Spain, latinamerica is more the future...
Thanks Pwner... Do you think it ranks just as well as a .com in those countries? I understand that country tlds rank better in their specific country but I am not sure how they perform in other countries as opposed to a .com or .info. Virulent, thanks for your suggestion but I really do not think that would add much. I understand that the main benefit I could have in that would be in case somebody typed directly the url (which I do not think it will happen). Otherwise since the .es site would be the one I would promote it would be the only one which would appear on the SERPS. If I have misunderstood you, please explain.. Thanks.
as far as ranking goes - in search engines - .es and .info and .com are treated the exact same way. I think .es would be better because it would target the correct audience.
I'm not a seo expert, but i think that google takes more attention of the content language than the domain extension (if you don't change domain location in webmaster tools), as an example one of my domains (.es) ranks better in chile and argentina than in spain, i think that's because there are less competition for the keyword in latinoamerica.
Are Latin American people used to the .es ? Do you see sites that target the Latin American market, partially or fully, using the .es ?
Thanks for your messages. My understanding is that a redirect is good as long as the previous url has already some traffic or people have a tendency of typing it. This would not be th case at all with this. However I may be missing something here since this matter has been mentioned three times in the thread, so there may be some benefit I am not seeing. Could you please explain. Well, I really do not know. I would like to know basically if SE's give worse rankings to ".es" than to .infos in countries other than its main target. Although I am Spanish, all the websites I have are in english so there I have no doubts. I am trying to start 2 websites in spanish now & I am trying to figure out the best route.
You can use es....and there is no problem with the rest of latins...they will enter your site too!! lol.
