    Hello,

Windows XP is going to be retired after a week (January 31). So what to do now?.. Yeah! we can still use XP, but XP is getting old! 6 years old. Read the BBC story:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6551429.stm

    and... Vista sucks.... :(

    So what now? any ideas?

    Thanks

Hope that you got as up-to-date a computer as possible before this happened?

Cause by the time you upgrade, all the hardware/software makers will have had to adapt.

If you can only get vista, then people will be less inclined
to buy a new computer, why break what you have?

When computer sales drop off (and personally I think that they
have dropped off because all the big box stores only offer
vista) revenues will drop off for the computer manufactures,
    retailers and MS itself.

That is going to put a lot of pressure on MS.

My company put all new computer purchases on hold for a year
before deciding that vista was cost too much in lost productivity
    to consider.

If it's retired, just download it.

Or I can send you a CD for free.

Or you can use a distribution called Linux Vixta I think... it's great!

Don't like Vista? Don't like XP? Hmm, well, what about:

    OS X?
Linux? (tons of distros really you can choose what fits your needs the best, debian, u/k/x/ubuntu, fedora, suse, mandrake, slackware, zenwalk and like 30 more:)
    Free BSD?
    Solaris?

    Plenty of possibilities.

Well, it's taken me 6 years to work out a set-up and configuration where Windows XP runs stable ... I don't even need to re-install Windows every 6 months like I used to have to do, because it gunked up and slowed down!!! :(:(

Heck, WHY would I start all over again with Vista???

    I am keenly waiting for SP3 ...

They probably will support it for a bit. . . but I think it's Microsoft's way to force the market.

Stop producing XP so new buyers are forced to buy Vista.

Yeah for you and 2 of your friends

Linus is years/ decades away from a decent OS thats usable by the general population.

Macs are the contender and is a more intuitive OS but they're prices are for 1st class snobs

Linux requires to much of a learning curve for anyone to jump in and use it. Any UNIX OS will, really.

Macs are the contender but I'd pick vista over w/e apple comes out any day. Apply stays to -When you buy our product you can only use things from us- for me to like them. I'd pick linux over that any day.

    Id pick that too ^^

Linux - unusable for mainstream and mainstream apps

Apple - Too expensive and only for snobs

    Windows- Priceless :D
