    The file should be emtpy, not containing anything inside of it.

    I am using blog ,dont know where to put the tag
    Edit:Made the html empy but still no verified
    Verification status: NOT VERIFIED
    We've detected that your 404 (file not found) error page returns a status of 200 (Success) in the header.

    I do not think it has to be empty.. I rennamed bunch of files, and used for verification.. They all worked...

    Yes,wordpress.But in which template.For example-sidebar,index,header,footer ???ANd where should i put the tag in this template,or it just does not matter ?

    Have you used the exact file name that google wants you to use? If so, it needs be placed into the "root" directory only!!!! That is the only place google will go to.

    Also, it doesn't matter if there is anything in the file or not. Google is just looking for the file name in the root.

    If this doesn't work, verify that there are no errors in the Webmaster account.

    And finally, you can not have a "custom" 404 error page. Just change the name for a week. Then ask Google to verify it. They will. And then change the 404 page name back again.

    Actually... you can have a custom 404 page. The problem here is that the Apache rewrites (in the .htaccess file) that wordpress installs are catching the request that Google make to see if you are using rewrites that catch everything.

    Google request http://sci-fiction.net/googlea7bbc4b2ae506173.html and then they also request http://sci-fiction.net/noexist_a7bbc4b2ae506173.html. They expect to get a 200 response from the first request and a 404 response from the second request. If they don't get both requests correct then they can't verify your site.

    The proper method is to make sure that any page on your site that doesn't exist returns a proper 404 HTTP status code when the resource is not found. At the moment, if you request the noexist link above, you just get back the home page.

    This has other advantages, such as helping every other person out there on the web know what's going on with your site. It's also nice if you can make your PHP code return 304 status codes when the page has not been modified but that's outside the scope of your request.

    The easiest method is just to ask Google to use the meta tags method but if you're up for the challenge there are greater rewards to be found by following the other path.

    why this stress about sitemap, I dont have any and I will never have, google has a good spider, so its not realy good for anything other then google now has more info about you and your sites, to rank you.

    This seems to me like a DNS problem to me. Your blog is http://domain but google goes to http://www.domain and cannot access it because DNS hasn't been set up correctly.
    See the difference? What panel do you use for hosting management? Can you add a new DNS zone?

    But anyway, yes, it seems a better idea to use meta tags.

    I didn't mention this before but verifying your site is not really part of the sitemap.xml procedure.

    What you get when you verify that you own your site is access to more detailed statistics about your site in the Google Webmaster Tools. Once you have verified that you own the site you can see all of the searches that have returned your page, even if no one clicked on them and you can see a list of all the pages that link to your site. You can also see details about how often the Googlebot crawls your site, any errors it found and you can change the rate at which it crawls.

    Even if you don't verify your site, Google will still retrieve and use your sitemap file.

    To be valid HTML, meta tags should go in between <head> and </head>. It probably doesn't matter to Google where you put the meta tag but if you want your site to validate then that's where it needs to go.
