Domain names completed by extension

    Hi,

I know the title is not too explanatory so I will try to explain further here.

Lets take del.icio.us as an example. You can see that they just added a del subdomain to their real domain name icio, which when coupled with the us extension makes up a great dictionary word.

I was looking for a domain name for my own niche and I have found an available domain name which when using only the country extension without any subdomains, makes up a decent name for my niche.

I apologize if I gave too many details, but I would like your prof. opinions, if domain name mixes like these are considered a hot property and would sell good?

Also do you know if owning a country domain name, like .us, .uk etc... requires you to be a legal resident of that country?

Thanks and I look forward to your replies.

I wouldn't bother if you're just planning to sell it, but if you can develop it and brand it, then you'd have a much better chance.

These names are only good for techie sites, average internet users are likely to mistype them.

They are called 'domain hacks' using subdomains to create a keyword.

I have not seen any real demand for such domains, it was a creative way to avoid paying for the main domains in most cases.

What you're talking about is called a "Domain Hack" where you make use of the TLD to make up the word. Domain hacks are more of collectors items, but if they're very good, there can be buyers out there.

.co.uk anyone in the world can reg. .us you have to be a resident in the US or doing business there.

There are no .co.au names, it's .com.au in Australia

everyone could buy .co.uk .us and these type of domains are really good.

i'm waiting for ".rs" domains to be available [they're from serbia] because you could make great domains with them like:

well i think you're screwed if you're expecting something like it, cause most of countries in that region have a co or com before the country extension.
    com.al
    com.mk
    co.yu (former)

and for serbia you will probably get a sr extension rather than rs. It is the international country name that matters to ICAAN geeks.
