This is a great thread, its nice to see lots of reasons where you various users prefer one or the other or a bit of both, currently im becoming very interested in Joomla. I keep reading that it has a learning curve, but im one of those people that doesn't mind that, i imagine once i get past the initial period of head scratching that it will be worth the time.
I would recomend wordpress. If I had to make a new big site, I would do it in wordpress. You can learn a lot and get experience, and then you can start more sites using wordpress in a very easy way. Joomla can give you more things, but will require more work in the long run.
I currently use both software. Based on experience it is easy to get subpages get indexed and added to SEO with WP than Joomla. I am not an expert with the inner workings of both but I guess it's the simplicity of WP themes that makes them so SEO friendly. But if you consider doing a huge project with easy manipulation of modules. Meaning, total control of where to place them in you theme, then Joomla is the way. Joomal can do blog too and WP is close to be a solid CMS.
if you're building a simple blogging site and your a simple user, Wordpress is better than Joomla. it's simpler to use with simple features and easy to configure. Joomla contains a lot of features that might overwhelm beginning bloggers/users, but as Santiago said Joomla is better for big projects compare to WP.
I have seen too many Joomla websites with only one or two pages in the google index... it's scary... unless you plan to make some serious modifications to it... I would stay away from t all-together... I would suggest you go with wordpress... simply because it was a program built to conform to standards compliance to begin with... less bells and whistles... cleaner to work with and modify at your leisure... Joomla however has a long legacy of branching from different code projects... it's been torn in too many directions... unless you plan to throw 15 programmers at it... don't bother with it... Just too make sure my information is not out of date... I've gone and downloaded both to take a quick look again... Just looking at the simplicity of the wordpress distribution is enough to make me cry... Joomla 1,740 files... Wordpress 471 files... What exactly do you need your website to do? Because they both make websites...
Even after reading that in still going to begin to use Joomla, for what i need and the features i would like i feel Joomla can provide that in one way or another, thats without myself having used it yet, im impressed that it has a large community, tons of extensions and although i often read of the learning curve i imagine thats mostly down to it having so much that maybe some people dont know where to start. When i begin using something new it can take a while to settle down and stop getting excited about every new thing available but im guessing that Joomla just needs some patience. I can understand that some people dont like tinkering around with things, but i dont mind it, looking forward to being a Joomla user.
