If the government wants to spy on foreigners, that's a potential human rights issue, but out of the US jurisdiction. Those foreign nationals have to resolve it with their own governments.

Just imagine for a minute, that we are under Stalinist rule, and you try to call your relative in the UK, to tell them about food lines, and that Uncle Boris got taken to Alaska to work in a mine for taking too many sick days.

The next day, the state gives you an all expenses paid trip to visit Uncle Boris.

With the new domestic terrorism law (HR 1955), and Military Commissions Act (domestic civilians declared enemy combatants on "secret" evidence) which basically covers "thought crimes" and the loss of habeas corpus, blanket loss of privacy is a serious threat to freedom.

Something as innocuous as complaining about federal spending could see citizens sent to Guantanamo.

Of course, you will never see this discussed on neo-conservative or neo-liberal sites, because the people behind this legislation are the Obamas, McCains, Clintons etc.

? HR 1955 was supported by everyone but two people. What's in HR 1955 is public record. No need for tinfoil, just facts - something you don't like.

Not quite sure what that means, but there has been a substantial amount of legislation passed that is not only unconstitutional, it limits the citizen from challenging the constitutionality of the law.

It's a very dangerous situation because laws like this aren't passed if they aren't intended to be used. The government would be much happier to keep passing around the pork, giving themselves raises, and handing out contracts and regulation to the lobbyists.

Nope, most of this stuff originates near the top, and sadly, 90% of the population neither knows nor cares. Unfortunately, these sorts of fascist shifts occur in a series of tipping points, and mirror the path that Hitler used in Germany to take control of the country with a minority government.

I think people have forgotten that the highest order of business for the government is providing liberty, not security. That's why we have the 2nd Amendment. So we can defend ourselves.

Yeah, but as I wrote, you won't find neo-conservatives or neo-liberals wandering over from the DailyKOS or LittleGreenFootballs to discuss this stuff. At best, they will make some tin foil hat cracks, and continue on without even bothering to read the legislation.

Mind you, in a total shift, these will be the people who would volunteer to purchase their own brownshirts, so perhaps trying to get a serious discussion on the topic with them is like trying to convince a monkey that bananas aren't good to eat.

Some people just like to be dominated. Might explain why they want the government to control them.
