I need a reasonably good opensource (meaning FREE) lol. CMS that would be good for a community "portal" Can anyone recommend anything? I would need user accounts, forums, classifieds, community events, mailing list as well (important).... the typical community webpage. (non government of course! ) Any and all help will be appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Hi mate, Try a phpfusion: php-fusion.co.uk/news.php I used it along time ago and it proved to be such a good little Portal CMS. Be warned though that it may or may not handle large communities. For something like that i would recommend a modded phpbb package. Kind Regards and Hope this Helps, Nick CEO Xeter Design and Development
It won't handle large communities? Thats a shame... at first glance it does look good. I'm not really interested in phpbb, there's some major security flaws with that script Thanks for the suggestions
Unfortunately iv never used joomla, would you know if the above "mods" that I need that are free in the community? also, how hard are they to install? I know with some cms systems (such as phpbb) you have to edit lots of code... which is something im not really interested in doing.
Have you tried postnuke in this case? It is suppose to be a more secure version of phpnuke, not sure how true is it though
Nope, I haven't tried anything yet. I had hoped someone else on here was running a community site and could give me some idea's, I am really trying to avoid installing alot of scripts and mods only to find out it isn't the right one.
Joomla would rarely ask you to edit core files in order to get an extension installed. And I do believe you can find all you need to build your joomla powered website here. Lots of free stuff to try.
I have about 30 Joomla sites and I have to say, it's the best I know. I have some really cool community sites with it. There is so many extensions that it would be ridiculous if you couldn't make one. It handles anything you throw at it also. you can see one of my community sites at challengecointrading.com
Hello, I would suggest you Drupal but the default forum that come with it is not so elegant.. You can have a look at Xoops Cms. lots of modules to choose from and I like the cbb forum that go with xoops. Regards,
Joomla for a community is really great. you can get a great template from templateplazza and community builder component is for free. you'll figure all out pretty quickly. joomla rocks!
I have installed joomla, and it does look good, but a couple of the things that I need - directory for one - isn't working right when I install it.... it's alot more complicated then I thought
Joomla is awesome for this, and I think you should take a look at Community Builder. It's an extension for Joomla that lets users link to each other and has directories and such. More of a MySpace-esque interface. I have put together many joomla sites and I have videos on my site to show basic installation, although you said you've already done that. Yep, I used Fantastico for the initial install. Fairly easy When I talk about "community portal" I mean a town/city business directory sort of thing, not really myspace-esque - would the Community Builder still be useful to me?
