Suppose you are travelling in a train(passenger train) from point A to B. And an old person in the train ask you, whats the speed of the train. Now, the Q. is how will you determine the speed of a running train in which you are travelling.

PS : You can't move to Engine to check the speed of the train.

Focus on two objects and count how long it takes you to get from one point to the next, then times that by like 10 and it should get you there.

For instance if it takes 5 seconds it would be 50 Mph etc...

But that would pose a problem of how far each object is that your focusing on... So yeah dunno then :D

Look for milestones! you will find them, like 10 kms away from this station, 11 kms away from this station! so, time taken to cover 1 kms that way and speed is determined!
    cheers!:D;)

    Simple.

    1. Go to the back of the train.
    2. Take out 20 metre rope.
    3. Make knots at a metre interval (1 knot= 1 metre).
    4. Attach a dead weight at the end of the rope... Not the old man, maybe his plastic bags.
    5. Throw the bag out of the train through an opening and let the rope slide through your fingers.
    6. Count how long it takes for 10 knots (10 metres) to go through your fingers...
    7. If it took 5 second for 10 knots (10 metres) to go through your fingers then you are moving at 2 knots a second which is 2 metres a second!
Say that to the old man and tell him to bother somebody else!

PS: Please don't tell me you don't carry a 20 metre rope with you!

    I think medaa is close.
What I would do is take my 100 metres of fishing line out of my pocket, tie a weight to the end of it, drop it out of the window and time how long it takes to spool out. With a little maths you could work out the speed in metres per second, which you could convert to miles per hour.
Of course, not everyone is as organised as me by carrying fishing line!

    This is nice :)

Well, see some 2 objects, object "A" and object "B"....its nice if they are moved each other for 10-20-50-100m...so, when you are on object "A" start counting to object "B"...let`s say...100m for 15 sec. So, 1km is 150 sec. you need to set it in km/h so it`s 41,6 km/h If I`m right...Or simpler, just ask man who is driving that sh*t who cares others :D

    Dennis ;)

Great Solution, but who travels with 20 m rope .......lol :)

Anybody with any other innovative solution, please now don't bring the barometer concept of calculating the speed as we don't travel with that. :D

what about measuring the time it takes for an object parallele to the train to appear and dissapear from the window? one could measure the length ot the window pretty accuralety.

if it has then considered the problem solved. :D:D

Find the time it takes for the train to travel between two points, the distance between which you know. Calculate the speed form the time and distance.

I don't know the solution exactly, but this was my response to the question when my friend asked me this Q. while we were traveling in a train.

(While traveling in a train, we have watch, we knows our height, and have some object with us. For example - coin )

Take any object say a coin in your hand at a certain height and drop the coin. Calculate the time( via watch), coin takes to hit the floor of the train. We will get 't'.

Now observe that the place where object falls is not vertically below from where it was dropped. Measure this difference, lets say x.

    speed = x/t;
Thus we can calculate the speed of the train.
