Online Courses Worth It?

I am wondering if anyone here has taken any online courses for web design, web promotion, webmastering. I have seen many commercials through out 2007-2008 so far about the courses and I am wondering if they actually are good and will have you certified in a year.

Also I am wondering the age requirements etc. of these courses because I am 17 and by the time I am out of high school I want to be certified in 3 - 4 criteria s so I can hopefully get a decent job right out of high school...

So please fill me in people. I just don't feel like spending $1500 per 3 credit course and not getting certified.

What institution were the commercials for?

One was for DeVry in which I do not trust that much. And the other one was for Phoenix University Online.

I've heard that DeVry sucks, and people think that degrees from DeVry carry little to no merit. I think Phoenix Univerity is a much more respected institution. You shoould be able to Email them to ask them about age requirements.

Don't know much about getting degrees online... like zacdavis says, Phoenix University is a reputed institution and might be a good option for you.

If you're looking to just learn programming, web design etc. practically without a need for certification, I'd suggest lynda.com... I used to be a member on there and I found their stuff really good.

You must check their accreditation, if they are accreditated by any of the 6 regional accreditation bodies or by DETC should be worth it.

To be safe, take a certified course by a company e.h. microsoft, sun, oracle etc.

Check your local community college. My community college offers online classes for web design.

I agree, this is your best bet. A lot of time you can take these classes for free through your high school and use them as electives. The problem with places with DeVry and even Phoenix University Online is their perception to future employers.

If you can't go through your community college, I would say Phoenix University Online is better then DeVry, just make sure you get your certifications through credited places like Microsoft. (As mentioned above)

Alright. I am learning a bit on Lynda at the moment... Found a link to a free 24 hour trial and seems to be excellent so far.

The only bad part about my community colleges is the closest is 45 minutes away or more. I live in a town full of (rednecks) that have not really got past high school or are 35-40 still working at McDonalds as cashiers and lobby attendance.

Also with this the schools do not offer really any online college courses because I think they know how the town is and it will not change. This week I will go to a sort of community college and see how much it will cost to apply and how long classes are.

Thanks for everyones advice. It has made me a step smarter in one direction of my life :)

To tell you how reputable the University of Phoenix Online is, I know a girl who is studying to be an RN at home, through the University of Phoenix Online, she is an LPN (license practical nurse), and is soon to become a RN (Registered Nurse) all through courses from University of Phoenix Online. She has to take her tests at local testing areas, but is doing all her schooling through University of Phoenix Online.

It is quite ok, accreditated with North Central Association, that means whatever credits you take will be easier to transfer to other universities if you need to.

Its just for the luxury... what do people think of when your riding around in a 1988 Honda CRX thats all primer and has dents all through it? Or what do people think of when your riding around in a 2002 Mercedes Benz with 20 inch rims. They think your actually some body :) And its comfortable of course...
