Accents have always left me wondering. Especially American, Australian and British accents.

Since Americans and Australians basically originated from britain..How come only the Aussies/new zealanders have that "related" British accent and Americans do not?

I think the American accent has some Irish in it if you listen to the "R" sound.

    Someone enlighten me.

I agree with you about the american accent having the irish sound in it, id say the irish iffluenced 90% of the american accent sound, although theres that part of the south somewhere, where they sound almost english, quite polite.

Wasn't just british that populated america, was a big part of europe, africa etc remember.

What do you mean by "related" accents? new zealanders dont sound british at all, they have the sound off of the natives.

    Regarding australians im unsure.

Sometimes natives of new zealand sound like south africans, and white south african have the dutch sound.

Well by fancy im guessing your referring to the stereotypical worldwide image and sound of a British accent, well spoke and polite but we dont all sound that way.

Im from birmingham england and were referred to as brummies, our accent is common sounding, think ozzy osbourne without the stuttering and thats generally how i/we sound. :)

Well I know it wasn't just the British that populated America.

New Zealanders sound alot like Australians. And Australians have the "related" British accents. They're right there. Kind of like Canadians sounding like Americans.

think about how the British say "report" and then think about how the aussies and new zealanders say it. Kind of sounds like "repolt"

I think what make the language evolve is the component of the american society it's a mixture of many different races you know "blacks, Indians, French, Jews " as each race has a different vocal piece morphologically (cause their original languages has to play on this e.g. the chinese found it diffecult to pronounce the "h" exactly the same way english speakers do ) so english eveloved to be adaptable and easy for all different tongues

in fact not only this has a role on the process environment and climate has a big role too (e.g. general people in hot places speak slower than the others who live in cold one ) we alson should not forget history and culture

I cant tell the difference between american and canadian accents at all, i know canadians often dont like being mistaken for being american. :)

I know what you mean about the way they say report.

Its interesting how americans say Premier
Brits pronounce it Prem-e-air or Prem-e-er

And Route we pronounce like root, but americans say it like rowt :)

    Interesting differences.

Americans are a mix of everything, though, Brits, Irish, Italians, Spaniards, Germans... the list goes on and on. That's why the accent isn't similar to anything you here elsewere in the world. There are also different accents relative to location, such as New Yorker, and Southern, even Boston has its own distinct accent.

Its Americans who think the Aussie accent is like the English, but I can assure you it isn't. The Aussies have a much louder nd depper tone of voice that almost sounds Americans. Here in the UK, people think the Aussie accent sounds more like an American one.

In America, I guess many people are fond of the British accent. Some American accent sounds good while others don't. I can't stand the Texan accent. Their accent gives the impression they are uneducated and live in caravans (no offense intended) but thats how it makes them sound, almost brutish.

Again, no offense intended, but I just don't like the accent that people from the Bronx speak. Its so difficult to understand them.

I am not keen on the Scottish or Northern England accent either, yet some others think a Liverpudlian accent is relally nice. I guess it comes a lt down one's opinon.

    no way.
How can y'all hear any Aussie in the American accent?! It's way more related to the British

Personally, I can't really watch a movie if it's all British. The accents throughout the whole movie can make me tired and can give me a headache.
But it's cool as long as I don't hear it for too long :)
I like the womens English accent though.

Dont forget guys that thanks to the mighty British Empire that ruled the world for so long, you can now speak almost like us and you no longer live in caves.

Then because of our generous nature we gave most of it back to the natives. What a wonderful race the English are...

I want to know why aussies and kiwis sound different. I mean, basically formed around the same time by a similar group of people. Ideas?
