I think there's a bit of that feeling but I think mostly they are just impressed. They see that I haven't had a "real job" in three years and wonder how I do it! The fact is this kind of entrepreneurial life just isn't for most people. Most people like the illusion of a safety net that a so called "real job" brings them. Furthermore, most people cannot think creatively enough to be successful with internet marketing, they may complain about their 9 to 5 job but they wouldn't really know what to do without that kind of structure, without someone telling them what to do. Another factor is that most people cannot deal with the amount of failure involved with being an entrepreneur either. If you succeed with internet marketing it's likely because you've failed at 90% (or more) of your attempts. Most ideas don't pan out. The ones that do hopefully cover for all of that "wasted time" though!
I often times get people who automatically assume I must be an EMail spammer if I'm making money online. I'm always quick to point out I NEVER send anyone an EMail (which is true, I don't.) And yeah, trying to explain affiliate marketing to people who don't really know anything about it is just about impossible. I'm actually quite happy though that making money online has such a steep learning curve and that most people could never really wrap their heads around how it works. I mean the amount of frustrated newbies I see on DP alone is very encouraging to me. If it were easy to make money online I think those of us who do make our living online would be in trouble. It's a good thing, really, that it's a bit hard to get it going. That it takes creative thinking and perseverance. That means more rewards to those of us who have what it takes to do it.
situation 1: Resto Bar friend 1: ed what the hell is your business? me: i do search engine marketing stuff i don't want to explain coz it is complicated. friend 1: so you work for google or yahoo? me: WTF! man no!just stop asking how i make money and what is my business. just drink your beer and lets talk about UFC ok? friend 1: man you're business is weird... situation 2: Mom's House my uncle arthur: hey i heard in your cousin that you are working with google! me: huh? i dont work in google! i have online business thats all. my uncle arthur: but your cousin told me that you are doing geek stuff for google! me: sigh...... uncle arthur can we just talk about politics? i don't want to explain what is my business, coz it is complicated. or may be you want some vodka i have one in my house?
genkied what you just said about "working for Google" is really good stuff. I have had the same thing... Apparently a lot of people from where I grew up think I "work for Google" it's like... they think of Google when they think of the internet so if I make money online it must be because I work for Google? I also agree it's very frustrating when people want you to explain, when you try to explain it never works so eventually you just do what you are saying, you just don't want to even try.
Nice one, I've had similar, Im earning something and I had no time and mood to explain everything to parents so I told them that I won some money in free tournaments etc etc (my first real cold cash withdrawal). Then I went to grandparents place and they asked me "How are you winning?" "Are you still playing?" "What are you playing?" "How much have you lost?" 'Did you lsot something?" They thought that Im some kind of addicted casino player Since then Im rather silent, and telling them that Im on vacation from bissuness
LOL, people always have to think about gambling. Has anyone had suspicions there running porn sites from family members? I have been questioned about it. I just started laughing lol.
Sometimes when people start asking what exactly I do I tell them I make porn movies and sell them. "Wanna see my site?" That helps avoid all the other questions
LOL, friends yeh. I think the solution is. Get filthy rich from the internet and then your friends can't say bad things.
I do run a "normal" business (SEO and web hosting), going to office 5 days a week 9-17, therefore many of my friends just don't know about the online money thing (although it is so far just an additional income for me). Even if my online income grows beyond the offline one I still plan to continue doing the office thing, just not to have to explain what internet income is
Is there anybody who doing p0rn business? I'll start an adult related site soon - and I hope it'll works well. so, what should I tell to my friends? "Oh, you know... I just selling some porn on the net, and I make a lot of cash"
Nah i will pass lol. Im sure some others on here will be curious to give it a go though. Im actually going to start telling my friends im doing the same. Making those videos. It should be good, will stop all the negative questions.
yeah my friend also feel the same...my gf even said to me...u love ur comp more than me i also replied and said that because my comp let me do what ever i want and dont retaliate
And your comp pays you lol. Were all in the same boat. I bet if you had a study on all DP users. A majority of us would live very similar lives. And have similar life problems, e.g friends thinking internet is weird.
ooooops how can i forget that one!! yeah right we all are some what similar but with one main diff...and that is the pay level... When am i going to be SHOEMONEY
Aiming a bit low my friend. Just try to do the next facebook. And then buy facebook and myspace . And continue to sell your sig links for $5 a month.
