Well, it depends on the name, some names make more with a hyphen and some with .net, register both of them and then tell us the names and we can help you decide which one you should keep and which one you get refunded. Also, before doing this make sure your domain registrar offers domain name refund (for example moniker, domaindiscover do, if you ask for refund within first five days of registration).

Agreed. In that example I'd also go with the hyphenated .com domain

There is one more thing that perhaps one should consider in such cases... what exactly the website at the .com version of the name you wanted really has?

If its products/services and the geographical target market are almost similar to yours, you'd better go for the .net domain name. Even better would be to try and find a unique name! Or else, there is a danger of your site losing business as returning customers might not remember that there was a hyphen between the 2 words in your domain name and instead go to your competitors site.

Also, word-of-mouth publicity might not work for your site as people might once again forget the hyphen when telling their friends about the great service/product you offer. A disastrous scenario!

I don't mind .net's at all. Hyphens are the worst to me because they just look unprofessional.

good thing about this site is it is not for traffic and we dont care to market it, its only for customers to get a list of our portfolio, and will come via our biz cards

yeah. 1000-characters.com is always going to be better than word1word2word3word4word5word6word7word8word9word10.net, any day of the week. When I see '.net', I automatically assume:

    - spam
    - adult/drugs
    - warez/hacks, etc.

I don't think it is right to assume anything automatically just by seeing the extension of domain name, site content almost always matters more than name.

The search engines look at hyphens like spaces, so if your keyword has a space a hyphen won't hurt you in the SERPs. The folks at SiteBuildIt recommend hyphens for that reason, and I actually purchased some names with ok traffic with hyphens, up to two hyphens in a name because it makes logical sense that there would be two spaces in the name when typed in the search engine.

I'd rethink an innovative .com name as opposed to using dashes or a .net

Definitely a .com with hyphen "-" (saffron-group.com) is better than a .net :D
