I approached a webmaster to buy his site...what next ?

I came across a cool site that is high in the Aussie Google rankings for its niche and saw that it hadn't been updated since early 2006. So I decided to have a long shot attempt at approaching the webmaster to buy his site outright in a niche I have wanted to get into.

He tells me that he would like to sell it as his content writer quit after a few months and that the site gets about 5k uniques per month.

So I reply to him and ask him how much he would like for the site.

He replies and asks that I put in an offer. :D

I have no idea what the site is worth or even if its worth hundreds upon hundreds. Where is a good place to start ? Can anyone have a guess by just looking at the site and knowing its traffic ?

Thanks for tolerating my nobbiness ! :D

    What kind of content?

    And Remember: LOWBALL LOWBALL LOWBALL

if he is really interested in selling his site, and you lowball, he will come back with a counter offer.
But of course, dont lowball too much.

Not updated since 2006 and he is getting 5000uv's per month ??? I would seriously look at them traffic stats and ask where is the traffic coming from if there is not new content ?

i can say i have a site with 50k unqs a month, but without the proof it means squat in relation to the sale.
His hosting should be tracking the traffic via awstats, if not hes prob running some kind of statscounter....
you need to request all this info including the sites revenue.
Without this info its just the guys word......and WE all know how much someones word is worth these days.

ahhhh you guys are missing one of the main points... noobie2shoes wants the domain because it ranks high in google for a niche he interested in...

Noobie.... the real question is how bad do you want it... ... Remember google updates its index all the time... if the content is old... it could just be a matter of time before it drops.. look it up in a tool like www.urltrends.com and see what the history look like..

BTW... here is a good product for your doggy site... ;)

    This is bad advice.

When I receive insulting offers, it proves to me you are either a noob, or a joke. So I laugh, and do not give you a second chance. I'll simply tell you to go get some money, or a clue.

I deal with many established webmasters, and they those who are not working for adsense chump change tend to hold the same idea. We have a good laugh at people who haven't a clue what a site is worth and submit insulting offers.

    keep in mind

    first see the revenue

then see whether you can update it or not then make any offer

    Thanks

This really depends on what information the buyer has about the site to begin with. Without any relevant stats or history I wouldn't like to make a high bid for a site only to discover that it wasn't any where near the quality product I had envisaged.

If someone makes a low bid, its not difficult to point out exactly why this is way off target, giving the buyer time to reevaluate the price.

A n00b is still a n00b with cash no matter which way you look at it and a persons lack of experience in buying and selling websites doesn't exclude them from the practice, only makes them more careful, hence the low price offers.

    Thanks for feedback.

So far the stats are what he says they are but the only revenue is a few sports betting affiliate sales that he cant exactly confirm because he uses same aff. url sales link on a few sites. I will assume it as $0 when i offer him a price.
