    What does this actually mean?
Does it mean it is likely to delete soon? If so how long.
    The website is down.
But ican says it expires dec 2008

Well if you buy them after it drops then it restes. If i buy abc.com for example and then transfer it to you its ok. Once it drops it useless.

Sometimes godaddy has auctions. Or snapnames.com is a good one.

It was just a cheaper way.
most of my good sites I have simply just picked up the phone and bought the website to get the domain.
I tend to buy now on the basis of inbound, since I suspect that the context of the site will remain.
In other words despite being a new site, since the links are old the site will respond to juice without inducing the mighty G

That question has been asked here like a gazillion times already. That simply
means the domain name is locked and can't be transferred, period.

If you want to transfer the registration, naturally you got to unlock it.
