I want to start a website with people sharing different kind of stuff like photos, quotes, jokes and other kind of entertainment stuff. Would anybody mind advising if it would be a problem and a legal/copyright issue if someone shares a copyrighted stuff in the website? How will it affect me? Will it lead to legal suits? Also please suggest how much income would this kind of website generate?
This question doesn't belong in a forum of webmasters. It belongs in your mouth on its way to your lawyer's ear. Would you take financial advice from a homeless man?
This has to be discussed and dealt with thru an attorney. However from my experience I can say that when you have the right user policies and other documents in place, you won't face a lot of problems. For the rest it's your (or employees) job to moderate the website. When something does infringe copyrights, then the company that owns it will most likely first contact you instead of putting up a lawsuit. It's fair and ethical to first give someone a chance to correct the issue. Though I must say you'll receive C&D (Cease & Desist) letters a lot when you run such a website. Especially from other online publishers and networks. -Dave
You may consider it fair and ethical, but the OP needs to keep in mind that no one has to give him free warnings to remove things - besides, if they're offering illegal content, they really don't have much right to expect the people whose rights they're infringing to be "fair and ethical," do they?
Sorry for askin i n a wrong place. jus thought if i wud get an advice. As i thought it might also deal with copy right infringement, i thought i wud post it here. But yeah as it is a wrong place to discuss didn't get my answers as i wanted. But thanks for the interest.
