Partitions are not recognized ...

Just this morning, my office computer did not recognize hard drive partitions. My colleague ended up formatting the hard drive and reinstalling OS.

q1. Exactly how does this happen?

I am only guessing here, but I don't think that something like this happens for no reasons. I'm guessing that something happened after I left the office yesterday, but I don't now exactly what. I do know that my colleague used this office computer after I left.

q2. Is there a computer virus that does something like this?

q3. If not, what exactly makes this happen? Deleting a certain file? Changing a certain hardware configuration ...?

Your partition table was corrupt. If it happens again you can try fixing it instead of OSRI. What Os were you using?
Less likely. But Virus can be a problem. Most likely your hard disk is corrupt or Os did some malfunction.

Many things can be the reason, like.

Wrong drivers, Wrong HW configuration, OS malfunction, faulty HDD, System crash etc.

    Windows XP.

Can this happen all of a sudden even if you're doing everything right (having anti-virus, anti-spyware, not visiting warez sites, etc., etc., etc.)?

Of course it can just happen. No piece of hardware/software configuration is completely 100% protected against failure.

That's why we have backups ;)

If you encounter any booting or partition problem next time, try to fix it this way -

    1. Boot from the Win XP CD
    2. When prompted choose to repair the existing installation through recovery consol
    3. Choose your installation and log in using admin password
    4. type fixboot and/or fixmbr and press enter
    5 Run chkdsk
    6. Restart and see if problem is solved...

My PC hanged upon booting up again; the error message, "Verifying DMI Pool Data" was displayed. After I restarted a couple of times, interestingly, the machine booted up Windows, but this is not the first time I had this problem. In fact, I reported this in this forum when it happened last time.

I'm wondering if this is really a problem related to hardware ...? And there is something I need to ... fix / correct in my hardware???
