Many of you might be aware that there has been a prolonged battle between John Chow's blog and Google. Nearly 10 months ago Google penalized John Chow's blog for aggressive linking activity. The blog was not even first 3 pages of Google for its brand name johnchow!

Most people in the blogosphere - blogged about how not to play with Google rules! Google does not even spare big shots!

    But here he goes-

johnchow.com is still penalized. But his income has grown several hundred time. ( December 2007 income stats )

He started the year - 2007 with montly income of $3,440.66
He is starting 2008 with a monthly stats of $25,040.36/m in earnings

It seems - Google has no power with all its resources and mights to tame a smart blogger that John Chow definitely is.

    So who is winning?

    Google or John Chow

PS: Ok, not all are John Chow. Whereas Google is getting to us, atleast some-one is getting at it.:D

From the look of things John Chow is winning, but it's hard to get on top without Google's help.

Well to be honest, he got what he deserved. If he can't play by the book then he should be punished for it.

This might be true but it shows the power of his execution.

It's hard to argue with results.

Google isn't out to get John Chow and they don't care if hes making more money. What they do care about is their search engine and making sure that they can get the best results to their users. This means cracking down on the cheaters and John Chow was just one of them according to the Google TOS.

John chow is winning because he has loyal audience! when he recommends something, people use it!! So, it looks like established blogs can sustain without google's support! Even with google's penalty he is making nice money, but having said that, think how much more he could have made if google did not penalize that blog!

I doubt Google give a damn about John Chow ... he is just another site that broke the rules and got penalised.

As long as people keep creating link-bait for him he'll keep doing OK.

My concern with this penalizing is that if you are searching for john chow you aren't really getting the best result. I think John Chow really feels as though he maybe has more power or influence than he really does. Most google rep's probably have never even heard his name.

John Chow is winning. He's making more money than ever. And I think the publicity he has received from this whole situation has got him a lot of free traffic (like he's probably getting from this very thread!)

Google is losing because their search results are not relevant for the search term John Chow. The most relevant website is obviously JohnChow.com, their job as a search engine is to give the most relevant results, not to "punish" anyone. They are failing at their job. That's the essential thing that a lot of people don't seem to mention.
