Hello I am using z-index to render the content once page had been load. i did it because i m providing project description on my website if visitors want to see it. so when visitors put cursor there it will render the description. i used z-index to desplay the content. my question is will it harm seo point of view? thanks
Just a guess, but I dont think it would hurt. Supposidly, search engines dont use the CSS file, so, it would only add more to the page.
search engines may use css files, otherwise any one can put hide content using css class. please give the reply for the above query thanks
What does your code look like? (You may want to to post this on the CSS board and then link the thread here in case any moderators with trigger fingers come along.)
Actually i am looking for the guidance from Experienced SEO who had used z-index in pages and its effect on ranking for the site. that is why i had post this thread in seo category, i found some information here www(.)naturalsearchblog(.)com/archives/2007/11/19/google-hiding-content-behind-an-image-on-their-serps/ www(.)seroundtable(.)com/archives/015352.html groups(.)google(.)com/group/Google_Webmaster_Help-Indexing/browse_thread/thread/b795a33d92c2206a/ But still not confident about use of this. please check it and post here if any one have good experience with it.
Ok, you want the short answer with no real explaination then. It'll have zero effect because the HTML gets read in source-code order (meaning top to bottom). And in cases like this, CSS will have zero impact.
humm.. when is check source code of that page it shows the content in html. my concern is it should not hurt my site's ranking.
Exactly. As long as you're not trying to manipulate the search engines, CSS (and that does include positioning and z-indexes) will not have any effect on the search engines, unless you're trying to go with a stupid "content first SEO" layout that happens to be used on several large pages - at which point you'll be dealing with far more than SEO issues (accessibility and usability come to mind).
thanks for the tips, Actually i cant put content on home page body as it is already full of projects description and other things. so i have placed one help tag for each page and providing help for that particular page. Data which is there in help is comes through z-index. and it is crawled by search engine. i m not trying to go for content first SEO techniques but i have used it to get some content in those pages which might help to get rank for targeted keywords.
