Can this be done with autoresponders please ?

    In steps :

    Joe Public emails to

Joe Public receives an autoresponder from asking them to complete 2 questions

Joe Public replies to the autoresponder with the 2 answers

Joe Public then receives a different autoresponder from confirming receipt of their email and that a member of staff will be in contact.

(The clients would be expecting the emails),

Is it possible to have autoresponders setup like this please ?

There is no autoresponder that I know of that will do this. However, by using mail aliasing, you could get it to work, using a standard autoresponder. Since I do not know which e-mail server you are using or if you have root access, I can not tell you the specific steps needed to do this.

Many thanks for coming in here on this chrissyj - This could be the solution I've been looking for for about 2 months - I'm on shared servers, but not sure if I have root access ? How do I check please ?

How would your solution work ?

    Chris.

Hey, Chris! OK, if you are using shared hosting, you don't have access to root. But, you can either configure your mailer to have aliases or ask for support to do it for you. However, I need to clarify something. In your ORIGINAL post, you say you want the autoresponder email to come FROM - dod you mean FROM or TO that address?

    Let me know....

OK, then here is what you do. You need to set up a mailbox (we'll call it ) Then you set up 2 e-mail addresses "firstmail@123.com" and "secondmail@123.com" and have BOTH e-mail addresses point to the mailBOX . So, you would pick up mail (with POP3 protocol) from "xxx", and it would contain the mail sent to BOTH "firstmail@123.com" and "secondmail@123.com". Since the autoresponder would ALSO see that same mail, you could tell the autoresponder that it is "secondmail", but when it saw incoming mail from "firstmail", it wouldn't know the difference, and would reply to the mail with the "secondmail" name! Got it?

Hi Chrissy, ok, hosts all changed now and am ready to act on the details you kindly suggested, and must say that I'm far from being a techie and find it a little confusing ;-( how do I get the 2 email addresses to point to the mailbox please ? Are you correctly assuming 3 autoresponders in total ?

    The helps much appreciated.

Hello there! OK, you need ONE autoresponder. You need to have 2 email addresses point to ONE mailbox, and that mailbox needs to be the one which the autoresponder is looking at. You need to decide which email addresses you want to use, and then point them both (or all - you can point MANY e-mail addresses to one mailbox!) at one mailbox. This is called a "email alias". If you do not know how to set one up, then contact your hosting provider. I would suggest you set up one e-mail address as normal, and then call your hosting provider and as them to set up a "mail alias" to the existing email address, using the second email address.

Let me know if you need more info.

Many thanks ChrissyJ, it's very much appreciated. We're going to ask our hosts to see if they can help to set this up as you describe and will let you know how we get on.
