Submitting site to hundreds of Directories... Is it even worth it?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by dspohn23, Jan 14, 2008.

I just joined DP, but during the past week, I've read many people saying that Directory links contribute barely anything to PR. I have also read many people saying that Directory submissions are a good way to get one-way links.

    So now I am confused!!

I have a new website, that I just launched, it only has one back link to it right now. Would it be worth it for me to pay for manual directory submission? I figure it couldn't hurt to get a few hundred backlinks, even if they are from directories.

What's you opinion, am I just throwing my money away, or could it actually be beneficial for my site?

    Thanks

It's worth it. Any little bit of link juice you get can help. As long as it's not one of those shitty FFA pages, directory submissions do help. If you don't want to pay you can use a free submitter like this one http://www.digixmas.com/directory-submitter.php .

i disagree, i don't think it's worth it. what you need are QUALITY links-- you'll get less but you'll rank more with them. directories aren't helping that much these days.

Well, it is not worth doing it by hand. Especially if it is a new site if you are doing seo for google, as google put new sites in a sandbox.
It won't hurt to submit to hundreds of directories, but you will not receive any immediate benefit for a new site any time soon.

I think I am going to go to one of those services that will submit it to 100 directories for $10. I think I would go crazy if I had to submit to all those by hand!

Directories are worth it. But you should only pay for links in top quality directories. There are too many directories out there that offer nothing unique because they are built with free scripts.

low quality directory links might help in smaller niche where there is less competition but it may not be strong enough to help gaining top spots for competitive sectors, quality strong links is still needed.

I agree, but directories should not be counted out. A combination of directories and other higher quality links is what it could take to land that more competitive search term.

I am sure there are more factors than just submitting to directories that is involved in your site's rankings. I know that directories do hold value.

the amount PR that contributes to your site depends on the other outbound links on that site, directories have thousands of outbound links so it barely contributes to PR, if you want PR focus on quality, exclusive content on your site, you'll stat getting backlinks from some high PR site and you'll develop your PR from there, it's not worth paying for this but as it contributes a bit, submitting to a few directories manually is worth it, when it comes to traffic in directories you'll probably get something like 1 visitor for each directory you submit and that's it(on average)

For those that keep talking about quality directories that are worth it, what is a "quality" directory? How do you know if it is quality or not. DMOZ and Yahoo are obvious, but other than that... what is?

    thanks!

I would not recommend to submit into directories which not on the 1st results page in Google for their title query. For example query "aviva web directory", you'll see avivadirectory.com is not on the 1st page. This means Google devalued and penalized this site, so it's better to not be linked with it.

I am having my own experience in this.I got good SERP from just directory submission and social bookmarking alone.

I don't get the social bookmarking thing either. To have success, do you have to get a bunch of friends to stumble or digg you?

What directories? You did as many free ones as you could, or did you pay?
