I actually thought it was a nice little forum when it started out. I must admit I haven't visited recently, so I can't comment on what it was like recently. I will say in general terms, though, that it doesn't take many bad posters to take the joy out of running a forum.

My friend how truelly "wrong" you are.. :D

Myself and britishguy where just chatting about 3rd class ranking tools and how foolish we have been in
promoting someone elses product on our directories and showed him proof of a site that has nothing but
"directory, article directories ,bidding directories, niche directories" used and beating the actual Keyword
phrase domain in the serps and guess what.... A PR0 directory is linking on top off those other directories
that had nice PR given to them...

In the end its a tool like iwebtools or any other webmaster has his own created tool and just a product
like any other and only you the webmaster knows about it as most business owners and general public
    could care less about it...

Its all about the $$$ in the end and knowing how to promote your own products ;)

Heres a nice tidbit for ya.... look at where they got their last update from .... a "directory"

    thx

lol dumb mistake by folks at directory-owners...

it looks like i wasted my hour which i was asked by TC to add all my directory templates i have ever designed in there so users have a good resource. Ah well .. i learned who not to trust again.

I'll tell you why Google refer to it as the biggest factor, the pagerank system itself calculates a web pages rank by looking at the amount of back links the web site has, the quality the higher PR it receives.

Another word for this is Link Building, the more quality links you receive the higher you climb up on the SERPs, I hope you understand my point here, pagerank is definitely not one of the major factors in the SEO field, sure it may have a dependence but I know people with low PR and doing much better than other users with high PR, based on the same niche and targeted keywords.

I can assure you, we will have a good laugh about the pagerank system somewhere in the future. I think what you just missed is that, we actually don't adapt to changes very quick, do we? For some it can take years, whilst some have already started adapting to these changes, how come many web directories are now working on their content?

Seems foolish to just close it down on such an angry note. If the owner was really sick of all the BS they would have done better to keep the forum alive and inject some quality replies. But as britishguy says it really is no big deal.

Those guys were nothing but a bunch of ass clowns anyway.

Nothing but bitching, moaning and crying over everyone elses success. It was mostly the Chris, Jeff and an0n show over there.

Since so many here appear to have not frequented that forum - a little history...

That forum was started somewhat in answer to this one when there was so much acrimony and very little intelligent conversation. There was also the thought of creating a union of sorts for directory owners. I joined several months later and the forum did indeed have more on-topic and helpful conversations then were going on here at the time. There was a decided tone of anti-DP and anti-PR from many, but again that was the catalyst for starting the site in the first place. (Think back to the who's script is best wars of last summer.)

Much like this forum, the conversations degraded and not as much 'how to build and nurture a web directory' type of information was being exchanged. Much like here it turned into "Ohhh, looky at my PR", "I've got a new PR x directory", "submit to my 10 new directories" and other nonsense.

I think the owners made a crucial mistake in the very beginning - the forum should have been invitation only based on a webmaster's posts on this and other webmaster forums. I went from a daily visitor to a weekly one and perhaps once a month after that. I happened to have looked around last week and saw absolutely nothing of value being discussed and was sorry such a fine project had failed. Guess Tom just saw the writing on the wall and is calling it quits - can't blame him really.

He had been calling for less dependence on PR, increasing content and quality since day one. Unfortunately, many blindly continued the way they had been and many directory owners are now paying for that with the penalties being handed out by G.

Spammers? Yeah, if you call the QBC and other misguided and uneducated directory owners spammers - then it's true - that's what ultimately killed the site.

Interesting. Probably you knew the owner, Tom, very closely!
I feel sorry for the project after learning about it's history!

Now, since i know more on the issue....i think Tom really asked for lesser wish from his friends Google! PR0 for spammy directories? Why didn't he wish for hell for spammers?

I am also F***ing tired of all these people moaning about their PR and directories

People were making millions without PR before it even existed and if Google were to disappear from the surface, people would still make millions. Masturbating over PR because you can sell expensive links the higher it is is just a flawed business model. Quality is the key, PR will follow...

I understand why that guy got annoyed, even here on DP it gets boring. Directories, google and other search engines aren't essential to be successful on the internet. If you wait for your customer to find you on the net, you might as well pack your bags...

Big up to that guy for telling it like it is.

I don't really know Tom all that well. I just agreed with the reasons for building his forum and hoped it would lead to positive changes in the directory industry.

I think there's simply too much quick and dirty cash to be made with directories for things to change unless an outside force causes it to happen. Unfortunately, many who are creating worthwhile directories are also going to pay the price for such shortsightedness when the hammer does come down.

One of my biggest issues is with owners of established directories purchasing links and advertising on new directories that are truly a POS. They are only shooting themselves in the foot in the long run; yet, they continue to do it.

I never bothered with the forum as I didn't have time, but a collegue who was using it tells me that mismanagement and lack of rules and enforcement of rules was to blame.
