Citibank is planning 20,000 layoffs and a subprime mortgage writedown of as much of $20 billion

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080115/bs_nm/citigroup_china_dc

That's more expensive than a bottle of Dom Pérignon. I'm going to stick to mescal.

Risk wise, the so call risk free should be treasury bills which is normally given a beta of 1.0. But somehow I feel that gold is safer even though theoretically it isn't.

You can not go to a decent club or hangout spot in Miami without dropping over $400...or you can wait in line for hours and IF you are lucky and with a hot girl you'll get in, maybe. Most practical (but not the best financial decision) is to just get bottle service. I'm on the VIP list of a bunch of clubs here, and I get SMSs every week. I think they just share the client info with their promoters or something, but its fine with me as I have gotten in to some pretty cool events that otherwise I would not even have know about them.

It depends on how you define safe..

If safe is betting that a $40,000 investment in gold will yield a return in a month (short term) and make a quick buck..

If safe is putting money some place where it is guaranteed to earn a return over the long term and short term, however smaller, but guaranteed...

My money is always on the long term, never the quick buck... You stand a better chance at losing a lot and gaining a lot on the short term.

Long term, you don't lose anything.

There is the difference of risk.

The only real way to make a short term gain worth while is if the return is extremely large... If not, you are better off putting money into an IRA, Mutual Fund, Tax Free Muni's, CD, Money Market, a interest bearing checking account, credit union, or real-estate.

You have to buy a lot of gold to get a return, long or short... A lot...

Thats why sorry to break it to you, most likely you will never be rich.

Wrong!!! So why aren't most people rich??? WOW

Really??? Who told you that?

If Gold doubles in value in the next 6 months due to a decline of currency value or a recession you just doubled your money through your gold holdings! With your strategy Mia it will take you a lifetime to MAYBE save a buck. Also you could play it safe, but no risk no gain. Thats why it will maybe take you a lifetime to maybe have some savings and it will take a REAL entrepreneur a few years or a few deals to be rich. Mia, sorry bro, you do not seem to have the right mentality of one that can be rich. Most that make their money and are entrepreneurs do not have a lifetime to wait like you do to strike it rich.

If you're a US Citizen and living in the US then treasury bills are your safest bet. If they default they will be the least of your worries.

Anyone who thinks that they will get rich playing the stock market on price alone long term is a poor student of history.

The best investments at a time like this are foreign dividend bearing stocks. Take cash on the barrelhead, pay any taxes, and reinvest it in more dividend bearing stocks.

Share value is rarely representative of the fundamentals of a company, merely speculative trading. When people say the market is up, it may be in pure dollar terms, but not relative to cumulative inflation.

Are you 10 years old or something?

There is a difference between "rich" and "wealth"... I prefer "wealth".

    What ifs....

What if the price does not double, what if it goes down..

You have not read anything I have said. We are talking about Risk. The difference between a fast buck and a guaranteed buck...

Once you get a bit older you'll begin to understand...

Sorry man, I learned a long time ago that those who are rich have money.. That's it though..

I'm more asset based, which I consider wealth... There is more to be gained having money work for you, vs. just spending it hoping to make a quick buck.. I call that gambling.. If I wanted to do that, I'd go to Vegas.

Like I said, once you get a little older, own your own business, and start acquiring assets, you'll understand that...

Ok, perhaps 12 then... The preteen male tends to take great pleasure in name calling and baiting...

A 10 year old would still be more interested in playing video games..

Come back in a few years when you are all grown up and want to behave like an adult.

How low will you go. You sound like a child squealing, moaning and stomping your feet on the ground for attention. Isn't there a forum about reptiles/lizards somewhere where you can go and share your expertise on?
