I am considering adding a forum to one of my sites. The site gets about 1400 uniques per day and I expect that the forum will become quite busy. I am thinking of using phpBB (Is there a better alternative?) Can anyone tell me if this is a good idea? Is this secure, that is can it be easily hacked? Are there any problems I might face with that platform? I would appreciate any advice on this matter
I use phpBB3 - my site is not quite as busy as you expect, but many much busier sights use it well. It is very secure in the unmodified format, and is easily customized to your needs. Other options would be phpnuke, vbbulliten, maybe more, but I do not know much about them.
For a free solution I would rather suggest MyBB, www. mybboard.net Otherwise go for vBulletin or IPB ·
If you want free solution, go for MyBB If you want paid solution, screw it and go with MyBB anyway. I am in the MBB 1.4 beta and it has better features than phpBB, SMF and vB - including SEO friendly URLS, a Moderaor Control Panel (no free software I have found has this), a warning system, great ajax usage, and very user friendly on the Admin and the users, unlike SMF.
Go with phpBB. It's very easy to use and configure. A lot of people don't like phpBB but 3 is completely different from all the other versions and amazing. I use phpBB on all of my sites where I don't want to buy a VBulletin license on. phpBB is a stepping stone script, once you get a certain amount of visitors and traffic you're better off making the jump to VBulletin.
I think and I hope phpbb learnt from its past lessons, phpbb3 is suppose to be a far more stable and safe product. But I guess it haven't been through the baptism of fire, maybe we can wait a few months to see if any Smart Alex found some vulnerabilities or not.
Just a minor note but phpBB3 does have a moderator control panel (and there's for example warnings there) And the caching in phpbb3 is cool. (I have no experience of SMF though.)
heh, phpBB has been hacked so many times, and it's been established for so long, I would go as far as to say the developers have experienced everything the average hacker is going to throw at. But, I could be wrong. Further, I haven't reviewed the rewrite for version 3, as I stopped being active in the phpBB community before it was released. I could be wrong, but I'm just saying, if your #1 concern is security, phpBB is probably your best (free) bet. If you're going for features, try out a demo version of myBB/SMF/phpBB3 and see which one you personally like. They're all reasonably secure, meaning you should be fine, but backup the DB weekly just in case . I don't trust the security of any freely distributed code personally, I think it's about akin to distributing safe schematics if you ask me
I used phpb...and was hacked many times....Then I started to use vbulletin and everyting goes smoothly...
