Buying a laptop - need help!

Hello ya'll!

I'm thinking of buying a laptop! It would be used for my college work and should be able to run multiple programs - Photoshop, web browser, text editor, fireworks - without slowing up too much. I would be willing to spend £500. I had a look at a few and I've got these two in mind.

I'm not sure what one to get! Ideally I would like a 2GHz processor, but I can't seem to find any within my budget, so I think I'm going to have to settle for something lower. I went to lots of stores today and found these two which I really like. Which do you think is the best?

HP PAVILION DV6615

Or

TOSHIBA A210-17I

The HP has an AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core (1.8GHz, 1600 MHz FSB, 512 kB Cache), where as the Toshibia has an AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58 Processor (1.9GHz, 1600 MHz FSB, 1 MB Cache). I've never heard of the Turion processors so I'm not sure what they're like.

Any input greatful!

I'd buy the TOSHIBA A210-17I. The Turion are considered to be better then others in some circles.

I own 2 Toshiba laptops and I'll be buying a third one in the near future. They're reliable and sturdy and an excellent laptop all around. Hence the reason it got my vote.

 

pick toshiba. i've got one too and i'm really satisfied with how it works. also, i think the battery lasts longer at toshiba.

i have three HP computers, 2 laptops and 1 desktop.
I would suggest hp they have very nice laptops and their support is great

 

They both look quite nice, if i were buying i would go for the HP, but only because i have a HP and like it very much!

Remember, if you are shopping online use a cashback scheme like quidco when making large purchases like this. You should be able to earn a few £££.

I recommend the TOSHIBA A210-17I about which I had read in some reviews. I feel it would be a better candidate than the HP

 

I would also recomend the Toshiba, it's the best choice among those 2.

 

I don't know you - but I have been using several brand of Toshiba laptops for more than 5 years now - no complaint on any of them. My favorite is Tecra line of brand. I'd not recommend Dell though. It just not that good.

 

I'd go with the toshiba without even thinking.

few thing i consider when i buy laptop

1) get the highest resolution screen if it is available. Try to get at least a WXGA+ (i have a WUXGA, it has the resolution of a 24 inches monitor)

2) get low RAM, it is always cheap to upgrade the RAM yourself.


3) get small HD. A larger HD will increase access time, hence it will be slower to load. Try to store all media file in external HD and keep only OS and program in internal HD

wow, it is really expensive to buy laptop in UK. i can build a same system from dell for around 600 USD. for that price you can get a really good system with that price. Do you know anyone from US that can ship one to you?

 

Go for the toshiba...hands down!!

I'd say go with Toshiba too. My experience with the other brand of laptops have not been good...

 

They are both good brands. You might want to check and see if they have an extended warranty. Also, it looks like the resolutions are WXGA. This is ok, but WXGA+ or better is more advisable. (But sometimes hard to find because a lot of people don't know to look for that).
