Another thread for my notebook. I'm a newbie in this marketing stuff so all tips and tricks are appreciated but I must say that reading some threads in this forum is much better than reading several so called "SEO guide" ebooks.

Thanks a lot for sharing this information and let new people succeed or at least try to succeed in the online industry.

    Hi Sweetfunny,

I understand about the title <h1> thing. I am using a blog though that uses php and converts the bold text to CSS code. Does it matter? Or should I try to hard code it to <h1> tags?

Awesome post! Now you've got me thinking about how to use the "long tail" on my site.

However, I have one question: can "long tail" be used for a dynamic site? More specifically, can it be used on eBay affiliate sites with any advantage?

    Thanks for the info.

I used to do this with all my sites but as time went on I started getting greedy :D Used to start all my sites going for 4 - 5 word phrases, then I started only going for 3- 4 word phrases and the last 6 months or so I have found that I really only target 2 word phrases. One benifit I like from targeting the long tail keywords is seeing more of an immediate return on the work you do.

If you are a half-decent PHP developer changing the title on all of your pages is easy. Your website would be database driven so you just use one php file for all of your articles (for example).

On www.narutowallpaper.biz I have a file which controls all wallpaper pages, on that page I generate a title like -

    <title>$wallpaper_name wallpaper</title>
    or for alt tags
    alt="$wallpaper_category - $wallpaper_name"

Doing this you don't have to do anything manually except name your wallpaper/article/page and the SEO is done for you, the keywords are included in the title automatically.

Firstly, a truly helpful post (potentially as I am yet to try), thanks.

What type of links will do? It is surely quite difficult getting a link with strange sounding anchor text?

I am currently really struggling with Google (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=651625), one of my thoughts is that I am not ranking in the longer KW so why should they rank me with the shorter ones, hence the interest in your post as I want to see if getting ranked with LT keywords is going to help my overall rankings.

    Sweetfunny:

Any updates on this site you can share? Did they hold serps for these LT KW's? gaining any momentum? Adding more links?

    Thanks!

Yeah still gaining momentum, it's more than held SERP's and actually the thread should be changed from 4,785 Page 1 rankings in 14 days to "24,949 page 1 rankings in 30 days". The page 1 rankings is calculated off the stat that 80% of users don't go to the second page like last time. As you can tell the bulk is still long tail.

Traffic has times by 6 since last graph, here's the graph however it's hard to compare with the last because the columns resize to suit the highest and lowest of the month. However the lowest traffic day on this graph is similar to the highest day on the graph on page 1. Also the 12/13th isn't completely updated, although weekends is lower traffic because of the type of site.

This week coming from Mon to Fri i expect the "hump" in the graph to go a lot higher than last weeks Mon to Fri like it did in comparison to the first working week of Jan compared to the second.

Also yes i am still doing some work on the site, such as some link building but more than anything adding more content to existing product pages. Also revenue has gone up 100x, so they have made a positive ROI already in the exactly 1 month since i started.

A variety of links is best, get them from all different sources linking in to various subpages to your site. I really don't care about relevant links like every else says, i've ranked too many sites using nothing but totally irrelevant backlinks. But for human click throughs, it helps to be relevant but honestly search engines bring more traffic so i don't care about human clicks throughs.

Yes getting long tail gets you exposure, the more terms you pop-up in the SERP's for the more natural links you will get. Look at Wikipedia in the beginning for example, it's 1,000s of long tail rankings got naturally linked to and look at them now... You don't see them buying DP sig links.

But honestly if your site was getting +250k visitors per month from long tail traffic, would you be concerned you don't rank for a popular high competition term?

Thanks, they paid me well to make them happy so i did. :)

I'm still working on it for another 2 months, so it will be doing well by the time i finish. Also the on-site SEO is pretty much done, so now i will be moving to off site optimization to really lift the rankings.

I know the site already had a lot of pages, but you mention adding a lot of content. How can you add so much content? Where does it come from? It takes me forever to make content for 60 pages, much less thousands. I know a lot of people do it, but I don't know how?

Care to give us a hint on how much you charged this company? Ball park? It would be interesting to know how much a real seo firm would charge for such a job. On another thread a man said his seo firm was charging $7,500 per month for 12 months. Are you close to this range?

    Thanks!

Sweetfunny, I think this is a fantastic post with great advice. Thanks a TON for sharing it.

I have a small business (brick and mortar) website that I'm updating and optimizing. I switched it over to wordpress, and I'm using it as a CMS while still taking advantage of the blog posting feature of wordpress.

The question for you is, should I target these longtail terms using pages and subpages of the site, or is it ok to use posts within categories? Categories are linked to from the homepage.

    Thanks again!

Well i'm not really creating "new" pages, i'm adding a few keyword rich paragraphs to existing product pages.

The problem was these product pages were not really unique, as the same info is used on some other sites. So what i done is created several unique templates if you will just in Notepad, and i'd just Copy & Paste the most relevant one to the product and modify the major keywords to suit that particular product.

So this combined with the existing info created an overall unique keyword rich page for each product seriously cutting time and work.

    Thanks, glad you liked it.

With the natural flow of authority (Pagerank) through a website, individual post pages are generally the weakest. So these are best suited to long tail keywords.

Categories or major subpages are generally stronger because they are linked from the homepage, so these are best worked to target mid to high level keyphrases.

Finally the Homepage is generally strongest, because it has the bulk of the link authority pointing at it, so it's best used to target your primary keyphrases.

So it's just a matter of working with the natural flow of authority through your site, and targeting phrases accordingly.

    Hope this helps.
