Google Adwords Keyword Tool

    This tool seems totally inaccurate!

When it says no one is bidding on certain keywords, I then go and do a search on G for these keywords and it shows that there are plenty of Adwords campaigns going on.

For instance, using the tool says one keyword has "very low advertiser competition." A search on G then produces 2 pages worth of Adwords campaigns.

What the hell is up with this?

Even though google says nobody is bidding on your keyword you are not necessarily seeing the ads that are bidding on the exact keyword you are searching

for example if you search for waterproof night vision goggles you will see ads that are bidding on

    night vision

    night vision goggles

    waterproof night vision

    Do you follow me?

From my experience, what it really means is when you do the exact keyword search with [ ], you will see few ads compete with your [KeyWord].

I thought " " meant do an exact search

And BTW, after doing it your way, there was no change in the statistics. There were still plenty of Adwords campaigns for that keyword phrase.
