I'm considering a site that will involve payments to members. I'm in Canada but I expect most members will be american. The site is hosted in the US (but that could be easily changed to Canada.)

My question is, do I need to require W9 forms from american members and submit them to the IRS? Since the site is run from canada, I'm thinking no, but am not sure...

I dont know about Canada, but in the US a W-9 is required only if you pay out $600 or more (in a calendar year) to an individual. Some companies require the W-9 up front, but most will onll require it once a particular person nears the $600 mark
