Hi I want to buy a domain in a forum. How do I verify that he is the rightful owner of the domain. Is there any quick way to verify this? Its private registration, so Whois will not show the details. Thanks

Even for private registration, you can send an email to the owner and ask them to remove privacy.

Or even better tell him to take off the private registration or at least change the whois information to something else. The whois searches update very quickly, you'll know fast if he did it or not.

If they have a good reason not to want to change anything on the site, you can send a random number by email to the whois protection address, and ask the owner to PM them back to you via the forum.

A photo just means that they have access to the webhosting account, not necessarily that they own the name.

If you send an email to the private email address in the WHOIS then it should bounce to their real email address and they can tell you the contents of your email.

if he changed the name servers it could proove that he is the owner, but he should definetely loose whois if he wants to sell it to you.

none of his emailing whois proves anything. domains get hijacked, whois gets changed. it can be quite difficult to prove ownership with privacy these days. A historial lookup can help gauge risk, but proving ownership is a tricky and often difficult thing, and seems to get harder and harder.
