I bought a domain that is registered at Register.com. I want to transfer it to Namecheap. Register.com won't give me a transfer authorization code online. Here's what their web site says: How do I obtain my Auth Code? To obtain your authorization code please contact Register.com's Business Center between 8am - 6pm EST Monday to Friday at the numbers listed below: Toll free within the U.S. and Canada: (877) 866-0045 Outside the U.S. and Canada: (902) 749-2056 When you call, the receptionist answers the phone with a sales pitch. When you tell her you want an authorization code for a domain transfer, she sends you into a hold queue. The hold queue spits advertisements at you. As far as I can tell, no one ever answers that extension. I will not extend this domain at register.com. I would rather let the domain expire than do business with these bastards.
Why not just keep it there. Why transfer it all in the first place. Are they more expensive or something. ivnj
Yes, they are more expensive. But more importantly, I have too many domains to manage to allow them to be spread out across dozens of domain registrars.
Hi, Did you try contacting the online support team and explaining the situation? Most of the people managed to move it out of register.com after they sent an email to the support department. ivnj register.com has a 35$ domain fee way over any other registrar. One could easily reg a domain for 5 years elsewhere.
Register.com finally answered the phone and the domain is in the process of transferring. Managing hundreds of domains can be a real pain.
I suppose they figure if they make it as difficult as possible then many people will just let their domain name stay with them. They are playing the odds.
I've never heard of such a thing - the authority code can only be obtained through the phone.... I hope I will never use this domain registrar, thanks for the heads up. Yeah, makes sense.
where 99% registers give you online auth code, one or 2 companies making it hard tells us whom to do business with. besides, register.com is the most expensive register out there. why woould anyone register a domain with them in the first place where there are lot of reputable companies out there who only charge a fraction.
There will be more of this in the future when people who got free names with them recently want to transfer away...
Register.com is not B2B at all and is a pain to get domains transferred and yes, they try the sales pitch when you want an auth code. I manage several hundred domains with enom.com no problem at all and they are so far the best registrar I have come across. I pay $7.45 per year for my TLD domains with enom as I have upgraded my account to special pricing. If anyone is interested I can set up a sub account and you will pay $8.45. PM me if you want to try a subaccount.
Basically I have a reseller account and I can create subaccounts for clients or other resellers and set pricing as I wish. This means that clients that I have using subaccounts have a full retail account meaning they have full control over their domain names etc just like a regular retail account. Enom are purely B2B (Business to Business) so are setup quite well to handle professionals. 1and1 they suck more than register.com and netsol put together. No matter how much they cost even if they were giving the domains for $1 per year I would not use them. Yes, I have had some nasty experiences with their european division. Pricing at name.com is pretty good but I notice that those prices are a limited one time offer. I wonder what they will be after the offer closes.
I agree with this one. I have used several different registrars and I like GoDaddy and Name Cheap the best
I notice alot of people on DP here use Godaddy. Godaddy in my opinion are "okay", but their control panel is waaaaay too slow to update. For example you have to sometimes wait 30 - 60 seconds for a dns change or update. If you change contact details for a domain you have to wait up to a minute or two before you do anything else witht he domain settings. Also they place dumb restrictions like if you change the registrants contact name you cant transfer the domains for 60 days. Their ordering and renewal process is very complicated also. Their domain pushing mechanism, overly complicated. Dont get me started on their dns control, thats way too slow for me. When a registrar hosts the dns for me, I expect to be able to make instant dns changes, not having to wait an hour or two for them to propogate. Godaddy is not really a business 2 business registrar but alot of web designers and seo's use them. Anyone using Godaddy here, I would recommend enom.com in an instant especially if you manage domains names on behalf of clients. Godaddy is a great registar dont get me wrong but I find their control panels and servers very slow to update data and in the internet business fast updating is important.
1) DNS is instant for me - maybe because I live in the U.K 2) Contact details - Well I have those set to my default WHOIS settings, I don't know why you would change it unless you moved house 3) Didn't know about the 60 days rule. 4) I think the process is rather easy, click a few buttons, wait for the end users to press another few buttons, and then it is done 5) DNS is instant for me. 6) Well I don't know anything about GoDaddy not being too business savvy. 7) The price is very good on GoDaddy, with coupons it can bring the price even lower.
I have to agree witha lot of that, it is anoying when you change name servers and you have to wait for the next "ok" prompt to click through, this goes on 2 or 3 times and if you don't it won't work. very slow for bulk management. I prefer Mydomain these days, I have tried them all, great fast reg & management, all features i need plus cheap prices (with coupon codes like "bargaincat.com" for 15% off). I can also use PayPal or my credit card which will both be ready to click in an instant for super fast registration and no need to fill in cc details again once setup in your account. Plus you can also set name servers and contact info on the names before you checkout at Mydomain.. also it is great been able to manage 500 domains at a time.
Oh yes! 1and1 and NetworkSolutions are two other great examples of horrible registrars! GoDaddy is OK, but Namecheap is better. GoDaddy's UI has stolen hours from my life.
