Nothing facinates me more than space, planets and all of the universe. I just don't see how it's never ending. Some theories say that it's like a globe like earth.. and no matter how far you traveled, you'd end up at the same spot. So if it is rounded like a soccer ball, then what's on the outside?
Funnily enough, someone has asked this before. The answer is NO it doesn't end. To be exact the universe is constantly expanding, as demonstrated scientifically by the Doppler effect. There is a 'red shift' in the wavelength of distant stars. Basically as the universe expands some stars are travelling away from earth and consequently the wavelength of their light increases slightly (towards the red end of the spectrum).
oh i love these things too, astronomy is quite fascinating,to me the universe doesnt end,as said country boy
I am not pretty sure about it. I think there is a next level. Something bigger than the universe. Look at the relationship earth>solar system> galactic>universe....
I am sure the end will come some time but it's still too far away and it will not happen in my lifetime so I don't think too much about it.
My mind is not capable of imagining that it never ends. You're saying it is expanding, so what's where the universe didn't reach yet? If it's expanding, it has to be inside something? An object cannot expand if there's no room. There's another theory which says the universe doesn't expand, but time is slowing down and disappearing. I'm not saying whether this is true or not, but I think it's an interesting theory. http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2008/01/scientist-says.html
It's very much feasible.. There's a theory about parallel universes too.. May be the universe is just a part of something beyond our knowledge and imagination.
It kind of makes me mad because I want answers but I'll never see them in my entire life. Whatevers going on out there, it's amazing. I would really like to know what's on the outside of the universe. If life happened here on earth, and the universe is bigger than your mind can think. I bet older/much more advanced life out there knows something! I bet there's billions of other planets with life inside this huge black space we call universe
It is very complicated to get your head around - even from an astrophysicist's point of view (although I'm a chemist). No-one truly knows what is beyond the edge of the universe. The fact that the wavelength of these stars' light is red shifted, proving they are diverging from Earth, is also further evidence of the Big Bang theory. Current science summises that these stars were flung out at the beginning of time and are still travelling at the universe's edge. A bit more about the Doppler effect: You know when you're watching Formula One motor racing and the pitch of the car's sound changes as it approaches and passes? That is an example of the Doppler effect. As the car approaches the wavelength of the soundwave is compressed slightly (compression = shorter wavelength = higher pitch sound). When the car passes the soundwave is elongated slightly (elongation = longer wavelength = lower pitch). The overall effect is that the car has a two tone sound as it passes.
Whether it ends or it doesn't end, I know one day my life will end, then I'll know whether the Universe has an end or not I suppose God will show it to me !
Ah well, who knows. Technology has advanced so much in the past years, which has helped us to learn more about the universe. And we're still young (Most of us), and there's so much time left. Plus, they'll explore Jupiter in 2015 'cause they've found ice there. And they're hoping to find any kind of life there too. This is gonna be exciting. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080107/sc_afp/russiaesaspaceresearch I'm not sure whether to believe in the big bang theory or not, because it involves the whole universe being in a tiny ball that someday randomly for no reason whatsoever decided to explode and grow until eternity. Where was this ball? WHAT was this ball? Why did it explode? Why is it expanding? As far as I know, this theory was originally suggested because the different galaxies are moving away from us in all directions. It's not that I have a better theory, but I just can't imagine that some kind of explosion created all this. But If the big bang theory was true, then it'd definitely mean there's an end somewhere. Anyway, I'd like to hear some more thoughts. Perhaps we're all just an experiment by some scientist in a parallel universe. And the whole universe is in his pocket
Well, the Big Bang is just a theory but it's the best theory we've got at the moment with all the evidence observed. In years to come they may discover that it isn't quite the full story. The universe is made of something called dark matter - no-one knows exactly what dark matter, although we have a good idea that there is 'something' there. A black hole isn't truly a hole, but rather a very small volume of very large mass. The gravitational field of a body depends on its mass and the distance you are away from it. It turns out that high mass and low distance = very strong gravitational field strength. This accounts for why black holes attract nearby bodies so strongly.
I've been researching a bit and came across this article about the big bang: http://www.umich.edu/~gs265/bigbang.htm After reading that, it's starting to make a bit more sense to me.
