Not related, just trivia, I guess. I once worked for a law firm, and the opposing counsel was Geoffrey Fieger, attorney for Jack Kevorkian. The guy was a trip - attorney, cowboy-style. Haven't read through the Kevorkian trial path, but it would be interesting.

Sorry to divert a bit away from the topic, he is a funny doctor, he was studying Chinese medicine part time and ask me if I want to try his acupuncture (those long thin needles sticking into you), you can bet what is my response! Funny chap. He can talk to me for hours while a long line of patients was queuing outside totally ignoring them. That's really a doctor with character!

But on a serious note, his opinions on hospitals nowadays was that they are all out to make money and does a lot of tests that is not needed just because it was prescribed as SOP by the hospitals. Doctors just follow them blindly, these increase health care costs and also cause additional sufferings to the patient. This is another point I would use to support assisted suicide, sometimes and lots of times, the doctors do not know best. Even if they do, out of fear of medical litigation they will give you choice (a) (b) (c) (d) etc you choose and they keep quiet. They do not want to risk themselves by helping patients choose the best choice. With such health systems, it is important especially concerning live and death, pain and sufferings, let the patient have a say. Some hospitals just prolong life because it is their SOP to follow and sometimes it is profitable for them, totally ignoring the patient's sufferings or opinions.

Murder, plain and simple. Is it really that confusing??? Same thing as abortion... killing a person who doesn't have the ability to choose.

I beg to differ on this, assisted suicide is when the patient agree to it, and he/she is given the means to do it himself. It is totally different from abortion where the fetus had totally no say.

Then in those rare cases you should be willing to go to prison for that person if you feel strongly enough about it.

We are having a discussion on usasportstraining thread about the pros and cons of making assisted suicides legal. What has it got to do with me going prison in any rare cases of assisted suicides? I am not a medical doctor by profession. And if assisted suicide is legalized why does he needs to go to prison? This is a discussion, I don't think you need to make it so personal.

It's not personal. I like you. Just look at the word "assisted suicide" for a moment though. Sorry if I can't understand killing for "mercy". Maybe I'm too dense, and if so, I take it as a good thing.

Then give the patient a means of ending their suffering. It's their life and their suffering, they should be given the choice to end it (both, I mean).

I don't really care for abortion myself in most circumstances, especially late term, but I don't see how assisted suicide as mentioned above is comparable to abortion or is anywhere on par with murder.

Maybe we have different approach to that word "assisted", in my view it is to provide the necessary equipment etc, then let the patient do what they want to do. Don't worry it is just different approaches and perspectives. Cheers!

My basis for saying "even you" was that even you, Being the only person who apparently didn't understand what i meant, Actually did understand what i meant.

The point i was making is that you were being pedantic just so you could find something to disagree with.

I could have said; "even the person claiming to not understand what i meant, Actually does".

I wouldn't want those close to me to endure their last hours on Earth in agony, let alone anyone.

The point I am making now is I am once again telling you to drop the baseless assumptions; to let go of your offensive smugness; to realize that intellectually you do not challenge, and you are no match; and to make your points without reliance on anything other than their intrinsic merits.

The point I was making is the point I was making. There aren't any hidden words between what you see on the page, no adumbrations concealed in grey script in order to cleverly disguise my intent. Read this, really slowly, and then read it again:

I meant what I said. I do not engage in pointless pedanticisms, because life is too short. Regarding the issue of consciously chosen death, the point I was making is that despite your desire to strip the "human" from "policy," such a thing isn't desirable, much less possible. Got it?

    My recent "Principles."

That noisome stench you smell is the swamp of 2a &3a that I feel you wallow in. I sincerely suggest you rinse off and grab a towel, and rejoin when you are free of your false conceits.

Learn the world is peopled with folks far brighter than yourself, who could chew your mind for lunch, if they didn't find such shallow jousting to be a supremely wasteful way to spend one's leisure hours; learn it, or forever be faced with the damning thud of slammed doors, and the only sound you hear, the burbling of scorn and laughter from the massed crowd of common folk behind them.

Your stated "principles" do little to encourage people to see you in the light you prefer when your actions betray a pedant who, In the absence of being able to argue their initial case, Desperately seek to be able to argue for something, Anything.

It seems "shallow jousting" is exactly what you are looking for, Given your eagerness to debate the trivialities of phrases that we all know the meaning of and your apparent need to purposefully misunderstand a point simply to give yourself something to argue against.

Want to know what your "principles" are? They are a list of things you wished people thought of you.

You are entitled to your opinion. I meant exactly what I said, as I always do. I find that your seeming desire to abstract human endeavour into the world of the "rational" as you filter it falls woefully short, in the manifestations of that apparent goal; I find that you are so loaded with prejudices, so precariously perched upon the struts and springs of your very narrow worldview, that you are anything but rational in your analyses, or that you have much that is original, intriguing, or worthwhile to say. It doesn't take much for it to come crashing down. My opinion, of course. And I guess I'm just sick of responding to your baleful crap, as I am with only a smattering, and only a smattering, of others. You're in august company.

As a start, if you stick to what is said, as opposed to what you believe are the intentions behind what is said, you'll find the world a place receptive to conversation. If you have a single instance where I debate for the pleasure of mere debate, tease a word into obfuscation, or any other variants on the current word you've looked up, "pedanticism," by all means, post it. As it stands, your arrogant presumptions are worthless emblems of your misguidedness, in my opinion, and I stand by the letter and spirit of my post - here as everywhere.

In my family, we did what could be considered an assisted suicide. She was terminally ill and had been in the hospital for two months. She was miserable and needed a breathing machine to help her breath. In her life she had always been such a dynamic woman. She organized everything, so full of energy and always best dressed. It sounds funny to remember someone for being best dressed, but she was like that. She looked perfect every day of her life. She hated the hospital and loved independance. But she was reduced to laying in a hospital bed, suffering and knowing it would only get worse. We disconnected her breathing machine, and she passed away within 30 minutes. We love her and miss her so much. I just wish she didn't have to experience the last two months like that. I do believe in assisted suicide.

in islam, chatolic and maybe jew, all suiciders will go to hell.
maybe this is why, in some countries are forbidden to do assisted suicide, because they affraid, if the sick person commited suicide (with they help) they will go to hell.
so actually, in their mind, they are helping the sick people.
I never come across the situation, but if i do, i'm not so sure what to do.
yes, i can imagine how painfull to watch our loved on suffers in great pain.
