Im looking at changing the URL format for my blog.

    Currently my blog is http://dzrbenson.com/blog

would it perform better and get a higher page rank if it were

    http://blog.dzrbenson.com
    or
    http://dzrbenson.com

Depends what you want to be ranked as. I personally would use the blog. approach... that way you are advertising both... your domain, as well as the subcategory. Does that make sense?

If you want to give stress to the word blog, choose the first one. Otherwise go in for the second one which is simple and short. Remember "Simplicity is always better" :)

Unless your blog is part of a bigger site/portal, don't use the subdomain. If your entire site is a blog, then that's its primary function, and there's no need to have 'blog' in the domain. It's called a sub-domain afterall.

I think he means PR will flow into the subdirectory but it does not flow so easily to subdomains.

In my opinion you should only use a subdomain if the content is going to be significantly different than on your main site, if it's the same then use a subdirectory.
