Why are my sites ranked differently?

If I can I'll do ask this as a generalisation rather than posting site links.

I have two sites, both gaming sites.

One site is busy; frequent updates, thousands of uniques a day, many backlinks, first or second result on many SE for it's keyword - 2nd place on Google for over 3 years!

The other site is not so busy, infrequent updates, only a few hundred uniques a day, not so many back links, nowhere to be seen for it's keyword on google.

Here's the headscratcher, the busy site is PR3 (years ago it was a 5), but the quiet site is a PR4!

Is it just me but why would Google PR rank a site at 4 and not list it on a search for it's keyword at all, and conversely position a PR3 site right at the top of search results for its keyword? To me this seems backwards :)

PR has been going through some massive changes lately and does not really represent the traffic / quality level of a site, we have seen many busy websites that was previously high, going down in recent updates.

I guess PR has nothing to do with ranking on google.

Yeh, I kinda figured that PR has ZIP to do with SE ranking, so I guess my real question is, what point is there in PR?

PR is just something that makes a lot of people waste time in trying to improve :)

If you want to increase your PR contact me and I can help you, but if I where you I'd try and improve SERPs not PR

That is the impression I am starting to get. I'd love to hear a counter argument.
