U.S. warns Iran: Next confrontation could bring battle

When I was in the Navy, the Iranians were often pushing the limits by running their fast boats toward our ships, even doing flybyes (we came very close to shooting one of their planes down once). Rarely do these incidents make the news. I'd say that most people in the US don't know just how close the various militaries come toward a skirmish (or worse) with another country.

Most countries try to probe their "enemies" by doing things like this, but Iran is really pushing it with Bush seeming to want war with them. Maybe Iran does want war...

If that happens, then we all must prepare ourselves to pay a bomb from our pockets to buy gasoline and other inflated priced products......:(

Of course Iran wants war...think about it. So does Syria and every other nation that wants to harm Israel and the US. Sides would quickly be taken, and we would then be in WW4 before we knew it...although I think that after a few nukes were launched either the earth would cease to exist or the war would be over, maybe both.

I think the leadership in Iran is full of hot air. After their top general claimed that he could launch hundreds of missiles to reach a thousand miles within minutes of being attacked, I find them to be not very realistic.

I have my suspicions about the Vincennes incident from the early 90's and other minor incidents before and after. I'm not sure of their reasoning, but I do suspect that they're trying to draw us into something, maybe not an all out war, but maybe a battle or two. It may go along with "a plan" to martyr a lot of people and galvanize the radical muslim nations and individuals to stage more attacks on the 'infidels'.

I doubt it would come to using nukes.

They are trying to draw USA into battle so that their embattled leadership can remain in power. What has more uniting power than being attacked by the "Devil" USA. But in doing so you are only helping the current leaders.

Did you ever hear of the USS Pueblo? The crew and ship were captured by North Korea. The Pueblo crew were held as prisoners by the North Koreans.

Yes i have, The problem here is what do we believe? I also had a few friends at the gulf of tonkin. The problem here is we are all left out of the loop on both sides and only shown what they want us to see. I have read about too many incidents like this and talked to too many former soldiers to understand never to accept things for face value coming from our media anymore. The problem here also is i dont trust the iranian even more and they have also gotten more adventurous as their own empire has grown. Oh what a tangled web we weave when we practice to decieve:(

What right do US ships have to be thousands of miles away from their own waters in the first place?

It's part of being international waters. Any ship can go anywhere in international waters. That's the US right, just like everyone else.

As I mentioned above, the Iranians have been doing this type of thing for many years. After the first gulf war we were assisting with a salvage operation of an F-16 that went down in the gulf. The Iranians used fast boats to harass the salvagers. Our helo would turn on it's side a bit and spray them. They'd also done some other pretty annoying and dangerous things.

I wouldn't be surprised if they're trying to draw us in. Remember when they captured that British crew from the two Zodiacs just a few months ago?

The Iranians are no different than their flunkies Hezbollah. They are probably embolded after what happened after the Israeli-Hezbollah war and believe that they can defeat the Great Satan.

Nah, that's a neo-conservative thing. I think it started with Norman Podhoeretz (sp!). They all like to go on about WW4, it's a buzz word like IED or Islamo-Fascism. Not saying D16 is a neo-con, just that it is popular in certain circles to use that term.

The idea that Iran wants to fight the US is ludicrous. They have been trying to normalize diplomatic relations since 2003.

AND, it doesn't matter what happens as regards Ahmadinejad. The Ayatollah Khameini is the one in charge of the country, and the military. And he's no Khomeini with the Great Satan rhetoric.

Are you kidding? Hugo Chavez would jump at the chace to fight America. Haven't you ever heard him talk about how he's going to own the US one day?? There are so many countries that would be more likely to fight against us nowadays after the war and Bush.....
