Everyone seems to really want to get 1000's of pages indexed, but what's the point? Won't they be under all the other sites who are index with the similar keywords?

maybe I'm missing the point... what are the benefits of being indexed?

It's not just about being indexed, but having those "1000s of pages" all targeting different keyword phrases people are searching for. As for them being "under" other sites with similar keywords, that depends on whether or not their search engine optimization was any good. The idea is to get the pages indexed, and use SEO tactics to have them rank well for your target keyword phrases, so the searches drive natural traffic to your site. The more related keyword phrases you're targeting and ranking well for, the more searchers will see your site, and the more traffic you'll get. Getting indexed is just the first step.

No, being indexed - and getting ranked for many competitive keywords, means more traffic for your websites = more money in the long run.

what's the benefit of being indexed?

first, SERP is a place where a site will be projected to be seen by visitors who basically do searches. then, you ask for the benefit, an indexed site especially in a good ranking position has a chance of driving lots of traffic. then, if your driving lots of traffic, its an instinct that you use it to earn money of course. that's it I guess...
