Yea that is one reason I won't ever move to California. I am afraid of earthquakes. Tornadoes don't bother me. Hurricanes I wouldn't care for but they don't bother me either.
I've never seen one.. They do occur, though to me, they are quite rare in comparison to the ones I saw as a child in the lower Midwest. Sorry, the C6 was the identity of the vortex that passed over us, not the class. I heard it may have been an F5. The homes in its path have nothing but foundations left. I believe that was probably the one to hit Slades Corners/New Munster (not far from us) to the East when it touched down. No TV, No phone and No internet for about 14 hours... Good thing I have multiple connections at my office... Everything was up there throughout the storm including power... I guess the damage was pretty horrific a few miles from here. The news is completely out of sync on the numbers end.. At last count some 2 dozen or more homes have been leveled. The storm continued East into Kenosha and did more damage about 7 blocks south of my sister's house. Amongst the home damage, a train was derailed in near by Harvard by the high winds. So far no fatalities.. We have a pretty good warning system here. There was a lot of hail, but no noticable hail damage to the car this time. BTW, if you ever get hail damage, ask for new car... I had that dentless paint removal done once, it looked like shit! I'm probably gonna head out and take a look at the damage that missed us. The areas hit the heaviest are not that populated as they are in a rural stretch along US HyWay 50 between Lake Geneva and Kenosha. From what I understand the tornado traveled down the HyWay knocking cars off the road and tearing through subdivisions that border the HyWay to the North and South. I was kinda bummed I did not get to see the storm. I was in the basement at my kids school with about 500 or so kids. Thank God for cell phones or I probably would have gone insane. We have a pretty high profile murder case going on in the next town over. They had to move the jury, prisoner, and attorneys to the basement of the court house. That's a first...
Well there have been 37 reported tornadoes from yesterday until earlier this morning. They haven't rated that tornado yet Mia. Like I said they use the Enahnced Fujita (EF) Scale now. So what was an F5 on the old scale may actually be a lower rank on the new one. Here is the link to the tornado and hail reports. From the SPC main page they also have a link to the new EF scale. I hate the new scale personally. It confuses the hell out of me. I have knowledge of it to. Trained in this crap and still confuses me. DAMN IT ALL. Live links ain't available to me yet. Retarded ass forum. Take the space out. Also add http:// www .spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/080107_rpts.html
Glad you are alright, these problems are why I hate USA, otherwise I would go there! Lucky you were at the right place at the right time maybe !
It really should not come as a discouragement... I mean tornadoes in our area are RARE.. And when they do occur there is so much warning time that it is EXTREMELY rare that anyone gets killed.. People that live in tornado prone areas know the drill... It's probably the safest God made phenomena man can live through...
They made the news because of the rarity of the situation. That part of the country usually doesn't see tornadoes until May at the earliest most of the time. The fact of record high temperatures in the area made the news as well. That is what created the conditions for those tornadoes to form anyway. I was looking at a national radar image of these storms. I was impressed. It is very rare to get that many super cell thunderstorms together like that. When you do you get tornado out breaks. As I pointed out they had 37 reports of touchdowns. I do not know the number for today after 12 pm yet. That 37 was from yesterday when they started to about 12 noon today.
we usually have a few tornadoes here, but they always touch down in farmer fields and are done before they get out. about 10 years ago a tornado ripped off the roof of a school here... thats the most damage we had from a tornado (in my town anyways, lots of tornadoes at cottages/lakes) no hurricanes or earthquakes for us
Once in a while there's a tornado in Long Island or New Jersey. But really small and minimal damage. Perhaps a couple of houses slightly damaged.
Saw that.. Looks like the ones in Webster County Missouri (near where I used to live) also made the news.. My neighbor went out yesterday morning with his son to look at some of the damage and was not allowed anywhere near there... Apparently there were still a lot of power lines down.. As day light came it was apparent that there was quite a bit of damage.. Guess my sisters favorite Mexican Restaurant in Kenosha was completely destroyed just blocks from her home...
Coming from Los Angeles, we don't get too many of those. EarthQuake drills maybe. But not Tornadoes. Glad everyone was ok
