I want to give something away..

I just don't know what to give away. I want to hold a referral contest for my forums. I've never held contests or anything like that so I'd like some opinions.

What's reasonable? I can't pay money because I don't have paypal, so I'll probably just ship something to them straight from amazon.

How much should I spend?

And should the referral contest be like "first person that refers 20, 30, 40 members"? Or should it just be the person that refers the most will win..(I don't like that, because they could refer like 6 people.. and then I've lost :/

I'd do a posting contest if you're trying to boost activity. Giveaway an amazon give card

 

1 raffle for every 10 post or something, just to give others a chance, why exclude those who seldom post

 

I might do that. Or I might just say that the first person that refers 5 people AND reaches an X amount of posts.

Hows the posting contest go? Who ever posts the most? Or who ever reaches so many posts first?

ah, I'd post a thread on contest sections on many webmaster forums(Take DP as example), and start the contest like when we have around 20 - 25 people. If you do not have sufficient persons, i.e. 1 - 2 person have joined the contest, it'll be big loss for you.

For PayPal, Just create a account, and upload funds from your Bank(I'm not sure how to do it) or just trade with someone who is from your country. I'm recommending you PayPal because many of the users here and there would like to get paid via PayPal.. or just give a amazon gift card as ForgottenCreature said..

 

Exactly it does not have to be huge one either. It will inspire people to bring in new members and to post more. Especially if you put the card for posting then put another bigger one for when they get so many referrals. Like your name goes into a drawing for this card when you get so many referrals.

How do I keep a member from just spamming all over the boards just to reach the x amount of posts??

 

Tell them you check them periodically and if you find even one spam post they are out.

Tell them that the posts need to be atleast 15-20 words (example). Another way is to restrict the number of people who can participate in the contest.

 

Ofer some money that atracts the most people

Offer one year paid subscription or "Donor" or "Special Member" or "Champion Referrer" titles if you do not wish to spend on it.

 

That's actually quite good, But most people wouldn't go for it...
