Why do people use free blog sites rather than just making their own site? IE: blogspot.com etc... Is there alot more profit involved if you use blogspot or blog-type sites?
I use a combination. I have tons of blogger blogs, I have real blogs to on my own domains using Word Press, I also have black hat blogs (i.e RSS scrapers). The good thing about free blog sites like Blogger is that they tend to get indexed quick and can rank well quickly.
because it is easy to set-up and customize, and above all its free! However I always suggest for better control and long term benefit go for your own like other suggested.
i too prefer to have own blog rather than having a free one for long term ... i use free blogger too but in support type and not in a lead.
I think the flexibility of a real blog that you own is much better.. not that I have used blogger before, but I would assume that the mass of plug ins and extensions to wordpress makes it much better to run your own blog..
People use free blogs as they don't have the money to start a real blog. That IS the only reason you should have a free blog...otherwise your wasting your time and effort.
The free factor is probably the main reason. When people first start they dont want to pony up the $4/month for hosting and then later wish they could switch over. Although you can use the free blogs (blogger) to "feed" your normal site/blog. Set up your own blog on your domain and use the free ones to feed it and grow the incoming links.
