Ping is to alert the blog directories of new entries and additions, you can use services like http://pingomatic.com/
I believe that Wordpress.org also has a list of pinging URL's. Wordpress is another blog tool/site. John
Pinging is alerting the search engines that new content is on your blog, website, etc. Search engines LOVE fresh content and they'll send the spyders over to take a look. The one thing you want to be aware of is that search engines don't like to be pestered so it's best to keep your pinging to daily and ONLY if there really is fresh content. Just add site to ping sites and it pings directories and rss feed sites for you. Pingo matic and alot of others do it free
If you use WordPress, I believe it does it automatically. Just post normally and your WP Blog will get pinged.
