We beg to differ. 70%+ of Wiki's traffic comes from google.

In fact, google's love affair with Wikipedia has been the cause of many headaches for surfers. Google could pull the plug on Wiki's reign, overnight.

According to an article on wikipedia, the name is going to be "Google's Universal Encyclopedia"

The domain name has not been announced yet.

I think its just gonna be like encyclopedia.google.com or something. Also, I hope I can get on it early so I can nab the pages that are destined to receive high traffic.

Are you hinting that Google could use it's monopoly on web searches to elevate its other interests above fair competition? (Cue images of salivating lawyers.) Seems only a few years back another corporate behemoth was pulling similar tricks and is still feeling the repercussions.

I think encyclopedia.google.com is a bit too long, half the guys won't be able to spell it. Maybe something shorter like words.google.com or info.google.com?

They will not touch the word "wiki," why would they?

    They might just use knol.google.com.

There are already quite a few domains with the word "google" in it and they are ranking fairly well.

I doubt they will touch Wiki, they are trying to do something better than Wiki, to use wiki would send the wrong signals.

Because last i know, users didn't like watching ads on the clean pages. The only reason i like Wikipedia is because it is clean. It is a powerhouse of Information too.It is really tough to compete with Wiki as of now.

But Google will not allow Wikipedia to grow as at some point of time in future Wikipedia may get more traffic than Google...

Sounds pretty sweet. If Google is running it then I'm sure it'll be a success.

You bet! Whatever traffic that is suppose to be to Wiki can be routed to Google new Wiki, with such a strong and dominant search engine as backbone, how can they fail?

Wikipedia is a dot org. Non-profit. Where would that leave the profiteers of google, then? Wikipedia will always remain non-profit, IMHO.

When Google came in, they may have to change status from non-profit to no-profit :(

With all these fuss, I think the best solution would be for Wiki to Wink Wink at Google and sell to them for a cool ten digit sum. Win Win for both, google don't have to recreate a Wiki and Wiki founders can billionaires.......

    Google is too big.
    And it gets bigger.
At the end of the day Internet would become nothing more than a few AdSense banners.

I heard about this a while back but was a bit surprised - I thought google had clearly stated they weren't getting into the "content business."

If Wiki sells to Google, that is the last day i will using wiki.
Google is a company with a face of Apple and with the mentality of Microsoft.
Dominant, monopolistic, using private data to make more money...list can go on.

Now to reality, wiki would never sell to anyone. They are non-profit and they want to remain that way. Can't wait for their search engine.
