Hi I have a good idea for a site but don’t have the programming skills to develop it from scratch. I would really appreciate if someone could help me find a script or a good CMS that enabled me to create the following. The site would be rather simple and only require a few important functionalities. User submitted content Submission form Voting or ratting system Easy navigating Easy to skin
Hello, You can have a look at Drupal CMS If you want something more easy and quick to handle, look at joomla or xoops. Good luck,
I vote for Drupal too. Drupal is always easy to use, but you should make your arrangements yourself. There is a core standart, and you can fnd many modules on its official website www.drupal.org
hhmm.. sounds like you're trying to make a site like mine Drupal works great, with the exception of the 'skinning' part.. there are several themes to choose from, but not the greatest selection..
Which is a strong point of WordPress - LOADS of themes, and a variety of plugins that would help you easily achieve all of the above things that the OP mentioned Warmest Regards, Sagar
U can see my site here: http://waterfilterstuff.com/ this is a easy tool to use, if u are interested please click on the link Build A Niche Store at bottom
Thanks for the help everyone If you guys say Drupal is more complex that Joomla then there is no way on this green earth that I'll ever use it. For me Joomla is very complex and despite trying various times I've never been able to dominate it. Yesterday I did a google search for free CMS and although I found a lot of alternatives I still haven't seen one that really works for me.
Try Joomla! It's a solid CMS. There are examples of some good Joomla powered sites in this thread: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=58138
Since you are a novice, try WordPress that should be easiest of lot. Otherwise, I always suggest Drupal. But I guess it will be complex for you at this stage. I am not sure why you weren't able to get hold of Joomla. I suppose it's the easiest especially all functions mentioned by you are available by default.
I always vote for joomla i guess its hard when you first look at it as for me also when i first looked at it was very complex... but in these years i have been studying joomla as a cms and now i can easily design websites for me and my clients in joomla only... it has many components and modules which can easily make any-any type of site you want... i suggest you to read about joomla first and then make your site in it... as for me joomla is the best possible solution till date...
Maybe I'll give it another shot, who knows maybe this time round I'll get it. Did you buy the book or did you learn from the information provided on the site?
Hi, You have no idea what you are in for, if you are looking for user submitted comment because of the amount of spam that is being directed nowadays to public sites - unless you are running a porn site. Even Akismet and Bad Behavior may not be adequate to fend off the bots. However, if you do want to try out an idea, start with Wordpress. It has more than enough complexity (especially when you have to update the software) to keep you busy for several months. I think that Joomla and Drupal will overwhelm you. These platforms may be appealing to certain types of development projects that are manned by professional developers who can leverage and customize the platforms, but they are quite complex for webmasters without a good amount of php, html, and css experience. Rich
Thanks for the response Rich I've been using WP for over two years and I do favourite it over other CMS when creating sites, but I think this time I will need something more complex. WP is the best CMS for blogging, some static sites and maybe a few online magazines but it still falls short when compared with Joomla. You can see my latest WP here. What I require is something that offers more user functionalities like the ones I mentioned on my first post. .
just have a look at www.opensourcecms.com there are variety of open source cms with a demo version and these r free. Try the demo and decide which u can handle more easily. I will vote for WP ... easy to install and handle. Have a lot of features. Hope my question address ur needs. Good reputation will be appreciated.
Unforunately, with the added functionality, you get added woes. I've looked over Joomla, for example, and their upgrade path to 1.5, and I would describe it as chaotic. The whole development effort seems out of control and it shows in the product. Wordpress, because it has a more restricted and simplified model, is more under control and easier to maintain. However, it does create a more restricted platform. But on the positive side, it does work with a minimal amount of headaches - other than the frequent updates, usually because of security leaks. Joomla, compared to Drupal, is a masterpiece in design. Drupal is really geared towards the professional developer who doesn't want to reinvent the wheel, if at all possible. In some cases, it works. In many cases, it is cheaper to reinvent the wheel. It all depends. I would recommend trying to stay within the Wordpress confines, with a minimum amount of plugins (these voting plugins are loaded with security leaks) that touch the database. If you need to touch the database, change the database name and have some expert look over the plugin for security leaks. Hope this helps, Rich
You know what, maybe I'm going to take your advise and stick with WP. I'm really not in the mood to spend countless hours trying to figure out how to use joomla. Thanks
Not from book... there is lot of help in the CMS itself... just go to admin>>help (located at the top-right in the menu) just click that and you will find the information in detail about the components and modules and how to work with them... there is complete knowhow of the cms
