there are several factors, some times it indexed as soon as you post it happens usually when u have high authority site.
Blogs generally are indexed faster and quicker than normal websites. This is due to the rapid new content they provide, search engines love content!
I did that gambit where you create a page in your Wordpress blog, using a keyword that Google has no results of. I put the keyword in the title of the pag and in the content. I then linked to DP from that same page and had a link to my own home page of the blog too. I was under the impression that either the DP link or the new keyword would force G to index at least that page of my blog and hopefully the home page too since I had that link on there also. Somehow, it didn't index either page. What am I doing wrong?

first of all there is not any fix time to get rank for your site. as other member told, it is depends on many factor and keyword which u looking for. some time u get rank withing week some time u cant get rank within year. everything is depends on your optimization and work.
All depends upon how you promote your blog and also targeted keyword of your blog. Like If you have blog on SEO and your targeted keyword is SEO then your blog will rank on Google after lot of hard work and time.
Yeah that's true, it took me a couple of month to hit the top 20 for SEO so that keyword is fairly difficult. It could of been done quicker if i went out of my way a bit more, but as for the original question it's like saying "How long is a piece of string". It's variable depending on what you do and the effort you apply.
Popular unique contant may be your first step...I suggest you working with not very popular themes for example SEO,SEM,PPC. As a matter of fact it's pretty difficult to promote these blogs if you just start do it...Try make a blog with poetry...Make our world clearer and simpler...
