I have published the factors affecting SERPs according to the research done by a German SEO research company. The research is done on 10,000 random keywords and each keyword is analyzed with the top 100 results which means a total of one million pages. The results are surprising and comprehensive with graphs reflecting the results. It is a must read report.
Read this comprehensive results from the huge research done on keywords.

This is interesting. I dropped from the front page of google for a particular competitive IT consulting keyword I. I added an H2 tag with this keyword to my home page and changed the H1 tag to an h2 tag on the page describing that service again with the target keyword in the h2 tag. I will see if that effects my rankings at all, can't hurt right?

Trial and error...I have seen some top results whom use only H2 tag and uses CSS to make the size of the text bigger. They are ranking top page in SERPs.

Thanks for the link. I didn't know that image ALT attributes are so important for better ranking.
Also that h2 and h3-s are better than h1 seems to be so because remember the boom of h1 tags ? Everyone knew that h1 is important to have in your headings and it will rank your site higher with these keywords and people started spamming their own sites with h1 tags. Probably google lowered the importance of the h1 tag. It can now happen same with h2 but not to worry, theres 4 more to go :p

4 more to go... Very good one dude.
Any way i suggested to have a mix of H1 to H6 tags within your content which will not be see as Headline Tags spamming by the spiders. Use CSS to adjust each headline tag to the same size for better user interface.

I thought i would revisit this thread.

Ok I dropped to the 3rd page of Google for "IT Security Consulting" I added an H2 tag "IT Security Consulting" to my home page, and added an H2 tag "IT Security Consulting" to my IT security consulting page.

Besides that I HAVE DONE nothing else but add IT Security Consulting link to my digitalpoint signature and boom, I'm back on the front page of IT Security Consulting.

Not sure if the H2 stuff helped or if I am just rubber banding between page 1 and 3.

I did move a 2 ranks up for my other site after applying the H2 and H3 in place of H1.
I used CSS to change the font size of H2 to look like H1.

I will try the rest of the techniques mentioned in the research.
