My Laptop stopped working

Well it'll work when it wants to, but most of the time I will press the on button, the lights will blink on like normal, the fans will start up, then it will freeze up or something. Screen doesn't come on or light up at all, and when it does freeze the speakers come on and make a slight hissing noise.

It does this now about 90% of the time I try and turn it on.

Any fix ideas? I was thinking about taking it apart..looking for a loose connection or something. Loose video cable???

Maybe you'd like to tell us what kind of laptop it is?

Regardless... boot your laptop into BIOS. If your laptop screws up, then it's probably a hardware issue.

I can't boot into BIOS...the laptop freezes up before that. Laptop is an Acer Aspire 1410 that is almost 3 years old now, so maybe its time for a new one anyway ;)

I'm having the same exact problem with my laptop. Except the speakers don't make any noise.

Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't.

As of right now I finally did get it to start up (as I'm typing on it now), but I know that if I shut it off or restart that it will do the same thing again (not start up). Its really hit and miss.

To both of you try replacing the drives. Sometimes the drives go bad and will cause the tops to hang during boots.

Thanks for the tips. I'll check it out. My laptop is working as of now, so I don't really want to shut it off with the possibility of it not starting again ;)

Try booting into Ubuntu from CDR/DVD - this should tell you if it's your HDD that's screwy.
