mininova.org

I have always been intrigued that the torrent sharing site mininova.org has been allowed by the authorities to operate allowing their users to upload and share games, movies, books, songs etc, where similar sites in the past have been shutdown and taken to courts. Can anyone elaborate?

Following is the extract from mininova.org stating they do not host any copyright content, clearly it’s not true, there would be hundreds of thousands of copyright material if not millions.

Would like to hear from other DP members what they think of all this.

What to do if I want you to remove certain copyrighted files from your website?

Please note that we do not host any copyrighted content on this website. The torrent (metadata) files that we host do not contain data that might be copyrighted in any way.
However, we offer a service to remove torrents from our website if the copyright holder of the content requests so. These removal requests are only valid if:

You are, or your company is, the copyright holder of the content in question.
You provide the exact URLs to the torrents, no complete (sub)categories or search queries.

You provide the complete name(s) of the content in question.
You provide full contact information (including the name and phone number of the contact person), not a general anti-piracy mail address.

If your request complies with all of these rules, send a mail to . Please keep the correspondence polite.

We remove postings as soon as we can, usually within 24 hours. Keep in mind that we can only handle removal requests that comply with the rules mentioned above.

You are wrong! They actually dont host any copyright files on their servers. Read a little bit more about the torrent system to get it clear. ;)

So you are saying that it is quite legal for mininova to continue to operate??

They are actively providing directions to their users to how to convert copyright media files in to torrent files and then allowing them to upload them.

screw copyright holders, they're a bunch of millionaires trying to become billionaires (and some are billionaires trying to become trillionaires). mininova does NOT host copyrighted material, it doesn't do anything worse then google. google provides links to sites that illegally host copyrighted material, should google be shut down?

Demonoid was bigger than Miniova. They got shut donw...

That's what it says on demonoid. Same thing might happen to miniova. I think it is true that they don't "host" copyrighted but they do promote illegal sharing. After all, P2P - torrents - are made for this kind of stuff in my opinion.

I agree wityh you qardinal. If google CAN do it, why can't miniova, or demonoid do the same? :(

This was my point, that similar sites in the past have been shutdown and have also been taken to courts.

I think it is only a matter of time when mininova will be shutdown as well.

In my view, I do not think it is really about what we want, its about what the law says.

If torrent sharing sites are not illegal then why other similar sites in the past have been shutdown??

maybe they will get shut down, but i can tell you this, there are website owners who know how to do it right. they live in an area where they can't be sued and they use servers that are offshore and won't be taken down. the other sites that were shut down were run by people who lived in areas of europe where they ended up being raided and their equipment confiscated. if you want to run a site like that, you have to live in the right place, and have your servers located in the right place.

    All hail mininova!

I think the reason sites like demonoid were taken down was because they didn't keep their TOS or disclaimers as airtight as mininova does. Folks at MN know how to phrase their legal stuff so even if they're caught hosting copyrighted files, they can blame the users. I so love P2P.

They're being pursued as well (by the likes of BREIN) but have been a little less obnoxious than their conterparts at TPB so may have an easier time flying beneath the radar ...

A torrent file is simply a file which contains details about the file you are going to download and connects you with people who are sharing that file. All Mininova does is index them torrent files so people can download them. They are not saying hey use our site to get illegal files as torrenting can be used in legal ways as well. Also they actually have a system in place for people to remove torrents however sites like The Pirate Bay are just like hey f*uck you we are TPB you can't touch us.
