How do foreign domains, such as .ca, .co.uk, etc work in Google Search engine?

ie: If I was to go to www.google.com and put in: free baseball cards

would a site like free-baseball-cards.co.uk and free-baseball-cards.com have the same "chance" to claim the same rank on google? or are foreign domains blocked out of google.com and only show up on google.co.uk / google.ca and so fourth?

it depends on the language upon which the site is written in, it could be written in english but have a .cn domain and still be more relevent than other sites that are competing for the same keywords

^ Yeah, exactly what I mean, an English site with a .cn Domain.

Would the .cn domain hold it back from being placed on Google.com (Google's United States Search Engine)

For typical keywords "free baseball cards" you need to optimize it for globally and for best UK search results go on targeting for "UK free baseball cards".

Try to link build your site globally or get links from related site that has .com extension.

I think you guys are missing it. I am simply registering a foreign domain cause all the .com / .net / etc. are taken. This site would be in English, but wud have a foreign domain because the domain is good, but the extension is going to be foreign. Would this be affect ability to be placed high on google.com extension

btw, Its not always possible to buy a domain with a different country extension without having a registered address in that country.

The domain extention does matter to a small degree but with the right seo work it shouldnt be a problem and can sometimes benefit you by giving better Serps results in the country the domain extention is from as well.

it would make sense that the TLD is part of google's algorithm, and a foreign extension probably would lose some relevance compared to the .com (but probably gain relevance in it's on country extension)

I have a co.uk that rates no 1 in google.com, but it took quite a long time, and was no 1 in google.co.uk much sooner. So yes it is possible, but harder and slower.

The country of origin of the incoming links plays a role, I suspect. If your .co.uk site also has links mostly from other UK sites it will not rate so high in google.com, but if most are from USA etc it will be easier.

I seem to remember that in google webmaster tools you can define your site's target country - so you could perhaps set your target to be north america even for a .co.uk site

I am getting sick and tired of people asking plain direct simple questions only to be answered by people who don't understand simple English and don't answer the question. You people need to take remedial reading. He had a good question which somehow you misconstrued (look it up in the dictionary) even though it was so concisely written it couldn't be misconstrued!

neg reps to you. why dont you answer it instead of bashing the thread. if your sick and tired of it maybe you should go someplace else, the door is thatta way >->->->->

the question was answered in the first post. it dont really matter about the extension too much if you work hard on your seo.

I Think it doesn't really matters..Just gain backlinks and you get uniques from all the extensions...
