Question about CTR

I don't want anyone to violate TOS by disclosing their specific "confidential" stats, but...in general, what would be considered a good CTR? I've been experimenting with ad placement and text link ad types and am looking for a good CTR target to shoot for.

There's not really a good CTR, that's like asking "What grade should I be shooting for in school?" you want to go for the highest possible.

It depends. But consider this. If only 2 of every 100 visitors to your page (100 impressions) click on your ads (2% CTR), your ads are either not very interesting to your visitors or your visitors don't notice the ads. If your ads are relevant to the interests of your visitors and the ads are placed well within your content and your visitors are not return visitors who are ad-blind, there is no reason you shouldn't expect at least a 20%-50% CTR.

Thats true, but....assume I am not willing to put out the effort for the best grades, what would be considered average grades. I just want to know if I am keeping up with the rest of the class ;)

CTR not only depends on how hard you work and how well the ad placement is, it also depends on the type of site. for example: most proxy sites and myspace reosurce sites these days get somewhere between 1-3% CTR. but if you have a immigration consulting site (most content based site with rich conntents where people would spend time reading) that offers visitors ton of articles and resources, then you can get as much as 20-30% CTR or more.

It's also going to depend in your "stats" how you have your channels set up.....I wouldn't worry about it...just put relevant, keyword rich, quality and of course unique content on your site and you'll be fine..and of course play with your ad layout and placement

Well, for anyone not willing to put out any effort, I would say the "average" CTR would be in the less than 1% range. So, if you'e getting 2%, you're doing GREAT. But I hope you have other sources of income because your Adsense money won't be enough to buy you beer.

Thanks for the feedback. I asked the question because I've been tinkering with ad types and layout. I think my CTR is at least in the same ballpark as others.
My adsense earnings are enough to buy a beer now, but I am now shooting for the full six pack!:)
    Thanks again

Just continue experimenting and that is the only valid technique in earning bigger in AdSense plus use your competitive ad filter to gain ads that are high paying and limit low paying ones.

Overall, you're in the right track so continue. Good luck! :)

    hi sportsman,

the ctr highly depends on your site, design etc, but on average if you get 5-6% - that's an good CTR.
    Cheers
    Thomas
