How To Make Full Use Of Meta Tags

You can actually control how Google displays your results in SERPs with the following meta tags by placing them within the head section of your html codings.

1. No Cache
<meta name=”googlebot” Content=”noarchive”> - Will stop Google from caching your content. Google keeps a cache of your content, and a link to it is available in Google SERPs.

2. No snippet
<meta name=”googlebot” Content=”nosnippet”> - Will stop Google from displaying the short snippet of text beneath the title in SERPs.

3. No index
<meta name=”googlebot” Content=”noindex”> - Will stop Google from displaying the page.

4. No index Image
<meta name=”googlebot-image” Content=”noindex”> - Will stop Google form indexing images.

5. Setting an expiry date on your content.
<meta name=”googlebot” Content=”unavailable_after: 01-01-2008 08:00:00 EST”> - Will create an expiry date for your content, so it will not be displayed after a certain date. Useful for excluding content in a protected area.


Why Control The Way Google Display Your Result?
One main purpose is to prevent Google from displaying protected areas in your websites which can also be done though the use of robots.txt.

Another reason which is fairly important would be the risk of duplicate content. This applies especially to blogs where many actually had a snippets of the post and also the full story/article of the post. Duplicated content within sites will risk the disadvantages of being penalized by Google. With the above tags, you can control which page to be indexed or when it will expire.

Attracting clicks in SERPs.
You can also use the following tag to control how your result's description will show up in SERPs. Write interesting description that encourages searchers to click on your title.

I've a question about the first tag: noarchive

Will using it effect my sites position in the search results? or does it just remove the link that says "cached"?

 

It only removes the link "cached" as far as i know.
Correct me if i am wrong. i am pretty sure about this. Tried on my clients' site and did not experienced any drop in SERPs ranking.

I have seen results in SERPs that has no snippet underneath. Think. Would you click on it out of curious?
Any way cache is to prevent Google from saving a cache copy of your webpage. If i have a protected zone, i would not want Google to cache a copy of it everytime it crawls. This can also be done with robots.txt.

Nice info still I'm still learning about seo but i've never used the tags you listed. I only use keyword and description tags. for blocking googlebot accessing my private folders, i use a robots.txt file.. are there any differences/impact between using meta tags and robots.txt for my case?

 

robots.txt can do the same when blocking spiders from crawling a page. But if you wish to change the snippet of the result displayed, you need to use meta tag
