They have arguably most companies that there are bound to be some scammy companies as well....but they a TrustPass , ranking system so you can deal with those trusted reputable companies and do the necessary due diligence-
Use LC for initial transactions or start with small test shipments etc. , double check and cross reference with their other clients :)

I have tried Alibaba and had a successful transaction with a company listed there. Just look at the rating before you deal with a particular comapany.

OK...here is the thing.. Alibaba is automated marketplace/exchange for transactions. It is more of a Deal making/ networking B2B marketplace. In other words, you find companies you like to work with and liaise/ discuss with them via their Alibaba messenger or you can using other forms of communication. :)

I've used this website a few times to get all sorts of products, you can buy directly from factories:
    http://www.made-in-china.com

As long as you're know what you're doing it's all good :)

I went to the alibaba site and now how do I find out how much things are? Do they have a minimum you have to buy?
Can someone break down the process for me? Im always interested in learning new things.
    Thanks

    Hi,

well as said in previous post I only have experience with that other website, but it's basically the same thing I figure. You'd look for a company/manufacturer that can deliver the goods that you're interested in. Send them a message stating that you're interested in receiving information about their products. Like their product details, prices, delivery times, moq, etc.

Then they'll probably ask you what your plans are and how much you're planning to do bussiness with them. You'll provide them with an explanation and an estimate on your sales plans and stuff. Then they'll come up with a price for you, to which you will say that it's way to high. You'll discuss some details like the incoterms on which the goods will be delivered and the you'll need the HS Code for import taxes, and also you need to make sure that the products live up to the rules like ROHS and such. And in the end you will make a deal, or not.

And a personal note: remember to be honest, nice and polite to people, but you're not wanting to be friends here. It's bussiness, you're partners. And that's completely different.

.... but then again, this might be not what you're looking for :p This is only necessary when you're planning to do big things ;)
