Somebody just brought up this website at http://www.something.com that has a PR5 with just 1 word on their website. How did they do this? Is it because they are going after the word "something"?

We're talking about a PR 5 which is pretty good! None of the websites you just mentioned have that kind of PR nevermind just 1 keyword!

the site was first registered in 1999. google shows 176 backlinks to that site. so that tells me that only one word now showing is not the original site. maybe the site is going thru restructuring and contents will be updated soon. a site gets PR based on how many people link to it and what pagerank the the linking sites have. keyword doesn;t have anything to do with it.

Domain age and quality inbound links may be contributing to its PR5. any way check out whether their site has authority or trusted site linking in,..

How is pagerank determined anyways. I had a PR3 on my last myspace website and I only had about 20 websites linking to me. They were all 100% relevant though. Does Google base your pagerank on other websites that are related to yours? It can't just be based solely the number of inbound links.

I guess the age of the site and the quality of its backlinks made it get the PR5...

you are right. i checked the wayback machine and the site indeed has one word eversince 1999. so the PR it got is mainly from backlinks.

Well, I just ran a small analysis. The site has a couple of PR 6 backlinks, a dozen or so of PR 5 backlinks, and a lot of PR 2-4 backlinks. So the PR is real.

Couple of PR6 links are considered as authority sites which is highly valuable when it comes to SEO.
A Dozen of PR5....erm...it is not so difficult to get them, if you know the trick.

so you are saying a site is considered as authority just because it has a PR6?

there are 176 back links for that site and there must be some links having pr6 or more. that must be the main reason for pr5 of something.com

The domain was created in 1995 and it does have quite a few soild backlinks. After a little checking, most of the links are from people using "something.com" as an example in tutorials, etc. Funny, that with no content it hasn't been picked up by Google as a bogus domain. Go figure, just proves Google's ranking algorithm is garbage.

    Something.com is nothing.

    Do not go snooping around.

    You will find nothing.

    There is no treasure.

I think that this site is a kind of a weird joke
anyway, I don't think that it's so useful to rank first for the term "something"

One word on a one page site with a PR5 sort of throws the ‘content is king’ theory out the window.

The content has nothing to do with PR, i've got a completly blank page to go PR4 and stay like it through 2 updates.

Pagerank is a measure of inbound links, not a pages content.
